Celebrating Our Community Helpers!🚒🧑‍⚕️👨‍⚕️👩🏼‍⚕️🚓

Today, students at Birch Family Services’ East Flatbush Early Childhood Center enjoyed a special Community Helpers Celebration, recognizing the everyday heroes who help keep our neighborhoods safe, healthy, and connected!

We were thrilled to welcome three local firefighters who visited classrooms to teach students important fire safety lessons before serving as grand marshals of our community helpers parade!

The celebration was made even more special by the turnout of families, including parents who joined the parade dressed in their professional wear as police officers, MTA conductors, nurses, and doctors.

A big thank you to our visiting firefighters, participating families, and East Flatbush staff for making this celebration so memorable! ❤️

A visit to the library is more than just a chance to pick up a good book! 📚

Recently, participants from our Queens Day Habilitation Program visited their local public library, where they explored the facility, learned about library rules and etiquette, and practiced navigating a valuable community resource.

Hats off to a fun-filled Spirit Week! 🎩🧢🎉

Students and staff at our Soundview Early Childhood Center showed off their creativity and school spirit for Crazy Hat Day! Between silly styles, colorful creations, and some hard to believe headwear, everyone brought their own unique flair to the celebration.

A special thanks to CM Mercedes Narcisse for visiting our Mill Basin Early Childhood Center today and supporting our community book fair📚!

Council Member Narcisse met with parents, staff, and students at the school as well as members of our Brooklyn Day Habilitation program who run a canteen at the school each week.

Nothing says spooky season more than some pumpkin picking!🎃

Individuals from our Queens Day Habilitation Program hit the patch at the Queens County Farm to pick some pumpkins ahead of the Halloween holiday coming up!

We can’t wait to see the fun, spooky, and creative creations they make!

🎃 Our preschoolers had a wonderful time creating their own pumpkins through arts and crafts!

Using their creativity, little hands explored colors, shapes, and textures while making unique pumpkin masterpieces. We are so proud of their hard work and imagination!

We are pleased to announce that Josh Scher, our current Chief Financial and Operating Officer, has been appointed Birch’s next President & CEO, effective January 1, 2027.

Already part of Birch’s leadership team, Josh will bring his experience and knowledge of our organization to this new role, working alongside our community to expand opportunities for people with autism and developmental disabilities.

Josh will succeed Matt Sturiale, who retires at the end of 2026 after an extraordinary 48 years of service to the field with over 10 years as Birch’s President and CEO. We are deeply grateful for Matt’s leadership and lasting contributions.
