This throwback Thursday, we're highlighting last spring's Youth Photography Program at Freshkills Park. For 5 weeks, students from NYC recreation centers built photography skills while learning about the past, present, and future of Freshkills Park. Photographers traveled throughout the park, which is not yet open to the public, and focused on different subjects and topics each week. Here are some photos from our Spring 2026 Changing Landscapes gallery!

Our Fall Youth Photography Program is still exploring the park and can’t wait to share their photos with you. Watching them grow over the sessions and seeing the park through their eyes has been an honor. If you would like to learn about Freshkills Park history and document the transformation of the world's largest landfill-to-park project, you're in luck! Happy October from your friends at Freshkills Park! As you look around you may notice the leaves are already beginning to turn brilliant colors of yellow, red and orange. Soon enough, like the rest of Staten Island, we will be going into a transformation into our winter season, leaves will begin to fall and days will grow shorter. However, for now, fall is here, so come join Freshkills Alliance for one of our programs for a chance to see fall from a new perspective. Hope to see you there!

Happy September! Freshkills Park Alliance is excited to share our upcoming September programs with you all. Join us for guided walking, kayaking, and even mountain biking tours. Not looking for a tour - we also have family-friendly activities and art workshops to get your creative side out. September is Su***de Prevention Month. On September 13th we will be running three programs to raise awareness about mental health. Join us and give back to a good cause. We will also be celebrating Climate Week with a behind the scenes walking tour and a Green Jobs Career Fair. The diamondback terrapin is the only turtle in North America that lives exclusively in brackish water. Although protected by New York State law, these remarkable turtles continue to face numerous threats, including habitat loss, nest predation, road mortality, pollution, and illegal collection. Staten Island's extensive salt marshes provide critical habitat for this iconic species, making local conservation efforts more important than ever.
