A July 11, 1780 letter from General George Washington urged the rekindling of the Culper Spy Ring on Long Island so that information could be obtained about British movements in response to the landing of French troops in Rhode Island.

This letter, written at one of the Continental Army’s headquarters in New Jersey, will be auctioned on July 1.

Fort Franklin in present day Lloyd Harbor was erected by the British (1778) as part of a network of fortifications along the north shore of Long Island. It was named for William Franklin, Benjamin Franklin's Loyalist son.

The fort was raided by Patriots during 1779, resulting in the capture of many members of the Loyalist garrison but not the surrender of the fort. The fort was attacked unsuccessfully by French troops on July 13, 1781. At the end of the war, the fort became a Loyalist refugee camp until it was dismantled during 1783.

The site, which became known as Fort Hill, is now the location of the historic Fort Hill Estate built as a summer home (1879) and later enlarged (1900). The photo features a remnant berm of Fort Franklin.

We have featured this building in the past. The building was painted white in the last photo from a few years ago. At the time of Freedomland, the building was mint green. This photo is from late April 2026.

The address is 3000 Eastchester Road at the corner of Adee Avenue. Freedomland management rented office space and phone lines here during the park’s construction phase before trailers and then offices were on site at 2800 Baychester Avenue.
