Last Friday, Carter Watts ‘25 returned to the Design Center to teach a hands-on weaving workshop inspired by her woven pieces in the Weaving Dreams exhibit. It was the perfect study break, and a chance to consider how contemporary quilting and weaving relate to ancestral practices such as basket weaving. This workshop was a part of the commemoration of 100 Years of Black Students at Barnard.

On October 3rd the Weaving Dreams Exhibition opened in the Milstein Center for Teaching and Learning. The opening featured a live excerpt performance of PURPLE by Sydnie L. Mosley Dances, which celebrated Mosley’s longtime collaboration with textile artist and scholar Dr. Kim F Hall, part of the PURPLE “universe.” Along with a vibrant collective of dancers, director and choreographer Sydnie L. Mosley BC’ 07, and associate director Amy Shoshana Blumberg BC ‘09 led an interactive experience that showcased oral storytelling, embodiment and audience participation. The exhibition opening was enjoyed by 70+ attendees.

Seeded and nurtured by her time studying with both Professor Hall and legendary poet/choreographer Notzake Shange ‘70, Mosley’s work cultivates joy in community spaces, upholds traditions of sisterhood, and centers “elders as royalty.”

The performance was followed by a Q&A with artist Kim F. Hall, performer Dyane Harvey, and associate director Amy Shoshana Blumberg.

The Archives is excited to announce that the Círculo Hispano Collection (BC37-41) is now open for research and to share our very first bilingual finding aid. Processed by Archives Student Associate Gabriela Ogando Ortega, the collection features publications and a scrapbook from El Círculo Hispano—a former Barnard-led club for students and faculty across Columbia University, dedicated to exploring Hispanic life, culture, and literature.

Every month we highlight a different theme that can be studied or enjoyed using our zine library. Given the temperature and precipitation ups and downs of this spring, we thought weather in zines might be fun to explore.

As of 5/13, a CLIO search on < zines weather >, limited to genre:zines yields 26 results.
We love this zine about weather balloons: A Brief History of Balloons in Science.
