To Matt Locastro and the Undergraduate Student Government:

On behalf of the Media Board, I would like to assure you that we are not here to slander your reputations or spread “alternative facts.” As media organizations, we take pride in using our platform to educate and enlighten the student body, which I will be doing with this statement.

While I commend USG for its efforts to mobilize the student body to utilize our Student Activity Fees in a way that would help address pertinent issues while ridding Hunter of its budget surplus, we feel the current referendum is inherently flawed. It does nothing to address the root issues that created the surplus in the first place. It does not resolve the various hurdles that student organizations on this campus—not just Media board—face in their efforts to utilize their funds. And in addition, the fact that Media Board and other earmarks, such as the The Green Initiative Fund, the Welfare Rights Initiative, and the Student Resource Center, would be facing drastic budget decreases—as cited by the email correspondences with you below, Matt—without any efforts to consult us is drastic, misguided, and misleading, especially since, and I quote, “we [USG] do not have to inform student groups of cuts until this time because this is the start of the…process at which point cuts have been determined,” especially since students were not informed of these measures when USG representatives presented them with the referendum.

Most of all, bearing that in mind, as the president of an organization that would be facing some of the most severe budget decreases, one would expect that I would have been one of the “student leaders you consulted,” especially given that 11 member organizations representing an estimated 1000 students fall under my purview. Unfortunately, I would have remained oblivious to the referendum had I not had a meeting with the Office of Student Activities two days before the first USG Town hall Meeting.

Setting that aside, I understand where you’re coming from, Matt: you want to utilize USG’s reach to leave Hunter better than when you arrived here. And in the same sense, we, the Media Board, have the same goal. We use our platform to give the student body a voice, a place to showcase their creative talents, and a chance to leave a mark on this college during their time here.

However, this initiative threatens exactly that—a vibrant and thriving piece of the Hunter community that has inspired—and will continue to inspire—the students who call this college their home to use their voices for the greater good.

And we will not be silent.

Best Regards,
Kaliroi Halkias, Media Board President

03/28/2017

USG President Matthew LoCastro has proposed a referendum, unbeknownst to us (the Media Outlets), to restructure our Student Activity Fund (SAF). This will cut our budget, which we as students all pay for. The reasoning behind this proposal is to fix the increasing surplus every year from SAF; Hunter College has been flagged by CUNY because of these surpluses. But this proposal fundamentally misrepresents the struggles of our institutions. We all want to spend the money allocated to us, but we face obstacles from the bureaucratic process, which has consistently been unclear. So, rather than addressing the real and essential problems with the bureaucratic process, USG wants to “throw the baby out with the bath water” and cut our budgets.

USG is proposing to cut the Media Board’s budget by a whopping 65%. If this drastic cut is approved, most of the publications will have to shut down due to lack of funding. We were never spoken to regarding the needs of our institutions, and so conclude that such severe cuts are the by-product of lack of communication and unwillingness to commit to transparency from USG’s end.

The cut is just not for Media Board but also for all other student-run earmark institutions and clubs. The potential damage to our student life at Hunter is significant. We must fight this unjust and ambiguous referendum. Matt and other USG personnel are informing Hunter students about the positive and necessary goals of the referendum, such as increasing accessibility of menstrual products for students. But other details have been omitted. They are proposing cuts but they are not sharing that with anyone. This is completely misleading and immoral. Hunter United ran for USG on a platform of transparency but it’s obvious that they do not plan to live up to that promise.

So, we must fight this. Share this post everywhere. Talk to all your friends. Tell them not to sign the referendum. If you or your friend has already signed, let Matt know to take your name off the list. You should email him at [email protected] to let him know that you are not pleased with his leadership and lack of transparency.
On a final note, we need volunteers for in-class reachout. Please fill out this form to tell us about your availability. Support Hunter and its Student Organizations. We exist to serve you, but at this moment we need your support. Please SHARE & SPREAD the word!
