It was on this day 52 years ago that a grass roots movement was born in Chinatown, leading to the birth of Asian Americans for Equality. On May 16, 1974, our founders helped lead the first protest at the Confucius Plaza construction site, making a stand against discriminatory hiring practices. Eight weeks later, after many more protest actions, the developer finally agreed to hire 27 minority workers, Asian Americans among them. Every year, coinciding with AAPI Heritage Month, we pay tribute to our founders and recall the leadership and determination that were required to create AAFE more than 5 decades ago.
