⚖️ Week one of our United States Legal Immersion Program and Tour just concluded with a great agenda.
Our program is built on three pillars: legal practice, judiciary, and professional development.
To successfully engage with these areas, we liaised with judges, practitioners, scholars and institutions that foster legal excellence and shape the domestic legal culture.
The journey began with a Professional Development workshop led by Perla Jimenez. Then, a session about Alternative Disputes Resolution at the American Arbitration Association (AAA), followed by an Introduction to U.S. Law workshop with Hon. Rita Mella, Alain Perdomo and Perla Jiménez at the New York Surrogate’s Court. In order to catch a glimpse of the jury system, they visited the Manhattan Supreme Court, learning more about the jury selection process. To conclude, the participants learned about attorney admission pathways in the United States.
For a deeper understanding of the New York system, the group headed upstate to Albany, visiting the New York State Capitol and Court of Appeals to learn about the legislative process and the inner workings of the court. At Albany Law School, Prof. Meredith Miller led a discussion that allowed participants to understand the similarities and differences of legal academia between Dominican and American law schools.
The third day had three prominent events. First, a visit to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York with Hon. Analisa Torres. Second, a visit to the United Nations headquarters. Lastly, a Big Law practice panel with Hon. Rolando Acosta and Veronica Guerrero. To end the week, the Program had a visit to the Bronx Housing Court with Hon. Alberto Gonzalez and a Legal Writing workshop with Hon. Rita Mella.
As you might have sensed, the participants had an intricate and well-designed program that showcases the best of the United States legal system. We are extremely grateful to everyone that helped us by opening their doors and sparking thought-provoking ideas in the minds of every participant. Without you, this project would not be a success.
