Designed to stay breezy and cool, the Eldridge Street Synagogue features large windows that helped air flow through the space, along with terracotta and cement mortar walls and a slate roof that helped keep the heat out. For worshippers living in crowded, cramped and stuffy tenement apartments, stepping inside offered welcome relief from the summer sun and (often smelly) city life ☀️

Swipe for a transformation 💫
Preserved thanks to a grassroots restoration effort and the work of talented artisans in our community, the oak benches and pine floors in the Museum at Eldridge Street's 1887 Main Sanctuary are among the meticulously restored original wooden features in the space.
Today, you can walk in the footsteps of history—feeling the divots in the floorboards and sitting where worshipers sat for decades.
