Hi all,
Thank you to everyone who has reached out to express interest in the clay collective.
We are still awaiting guidance from Barnard regarding whether and how the clay studio will function this semester. As soon as we know more, we will reach out to students about the possibility of registering. Presently, enrollment is based on a lottery system, as the studio is too small to accommodate everyone interested.
We encourage you to keep and eye out for more info once classes begin!
If you have other questions, please direct them to [email protected]
All the best,
Jane, Parmis, and Jared

Greetings from the Barnard Clay Collective!
Ever wanted to try your hand at ceramics? Well now's your chance! We offer weekly handbuilding and wheel throwing classes for beginner and intermediate potters. Anyone in the Barnard and Columbia community is welcome to take classes at the studio. The cost of the class is $200 per semester, and this fee includes all materials (clay, glaze, firings, etc.) and gives you 24 hour access to the studio. The studio is located in the basement of Plimpton Hall (on the northeast corner of 120th and Amsterdam).
Since we're a collective, each studio member is also expected to contribute some time to clean-up and studio maintenance. If you're interested in joining, fill out the google doc below before 10:00pm on Tuesday, January 24th!

For new members, to reserve your spot in the class, you MUST attend the mandatory orientation meeting on Thursday, January 26 at 7:30pm, and bring $200 preferably in check form (exact cash ok if necessary). Those who are not represented at the orientation will not be given a place in the class, so if you cannot be there in person find someone to bring the check in your name. Classes fill up quickly so show up on time! We prioritize Barnard and Columbia undergraduates by seniority, but we are also open to graduate students and alumni if space remains.
The class fee covers materials and instruction. If it poses a financial burden for you please contact us and we can discuss making an alternate arrangement.
The classes are:
Beginners: Wednesday 5:30-7:30pm OR Thursday 5:30-7:30pm
Intermediates: Wednesday 7:30-9:30pm
Advanced Intermediates: Thursday 7:30-9:30pm*
*Advanced Intermediate is for advanced returning students who are proficient on the wheel and wish to pursue more advanced forms. New activities in the class will include mixing glazes and working with alternative types of clay. You must obtain instructor permission in order to take this class and confirm with us at orientation.
