Jews and Muslims in Contemporary Spain
Dr. Charles McDonald
Monday/Wednesday 12:30-1:45
SPAN-UA 461-001 (22793)
ANTH-UA 321-001 (23431)

Course Description:
This undergraduate seminar examines the shifting place of Jews and Muslims in contemporary Spain. We’ll explore several interrelated questions: How have “Spain” and “Europe” variously been defined as modern, white, Christian, or secular by figuring Jews and Muslims as others? How have these terms and the people they purport to represent changed over time? How do Jews and Muslims understand themselves in relation to Spain, Europe, and each other? At a time when racism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, and right-wing populist movements are ascendant, we will work collaboratively to answer these questions and formulate new ones. To do so, we will read scholarship in anthropology, history, Iberian studies, Jewish studies, and philosophy as well as considering fiction, film, and journalism.

We owe Sylvia Molloy the inspiration, initiative and creative momentum that brought together our department as we know it today. She was also the founder of our Creative Writing in Spanish MFA Program. Truly important as these are, they are among the countless manifestations of Sylvia’s extraordinary gifts to so many as a teacher, writer, thinker, critic, mentor, friend. Sylvia made our worlds feel wider, more exhilarating, welcoming, critical, humorous, imaginative, forgiving — spaces in which to speak and take action without fear.

Join us for a conversation about the history of one of NYU’s oldest cultural centers, devoted to Spain and the Spanish-speaking world, with the contributors to the special issue of Esferas, NYU’s undergraduate Spanish and Portuguese journal, dedicated to the KJCC and the broader issues of cultural centers within the academy.
