4 months until we celebrate 60 years. On Juneteenth, that countdown means something specific: every year UPROSE has existed is a year this community refused to wait for permission, for funding, for anyone’s approval — and organized anyway. We’re counting down to honor that.
On Juneteenth, we remember: nothing about our freedom was handed down. It was built, fought for, and claimed.

In 1966, during the Civil Rights Movement - the Puerto Rican community in Sunset Park held a Peoples Assembly and founded UPROSE to anchor the work that honored and gave life to our civil and human rights - 60 years later, we’re still here, building, winning, changing the landscape and planting the seeds that will make it possible for us to thrive in the midst of extreme weather events.
