On Sunday, Lt. B.R. Kimlau Chinese Memorial Post 1291 held both our Social Engagement Meeting at 12:00 PM and our General Meeting at 2:00 PM, and they were strong successes.

During the social, we shared food, conversation, and the kind of stories you only get when veterans sit around a table and actually listen to one another.

At the General Meeting, Vice Commander Wilem Wong presented the Post with an excellent plaque honoring Lt. Benjamin Ralph Kimlau and preserving his legacy. We are grateful for the thoughtful presentation and for the continued effort to honor Lt. Kimlau’s service, sacrifice, and place in Chinese American veteran history.

Thank you to everyone who keeps the spirit of Post 1291 moving forward.

The Kimlau Post was deeply honored to welcome National Commander Dan Wiley, the first lady, and his aide during their recent visit.

We had the opportunity to share the rich history of our Post, including the story of the Kimlau Memorial, which holds the distinction of being the only veterans' memorial in New York City designated as a landmark. The visit also included a walking tour of Chinatown and a stop at the Kimlau Memorial, which is currently undergoing renovation.

In the evening, we treated our guests to an authentic Chinese dining experience at New Hong Wong Restaurant. It was a wonderful time filled with meaningful conversation, cultural appreciation, and camaraderie. We truly enjoyed an incredible time together.

The post later attended the 2026 Testimonial Dinner at Antun's.

After a month away, it was great to get everyone back together at Lt. Kimlau Post 1291 on Sunday for another strong afternoon of conversation and camaraderie. Legionnaires shared stories about the military skills that still serve them in civilian life, talked through how their goals for 2026 are taking shape, and tossed around ideas for future social events at the Post.

Most importantly, it was a chance to reconnect, welcome new faces, and keep building the kind of community that makes this Post special. Thanks to everyone who came out and made it a great gathering.

✅One thing we may implement is the option to join us via Zoom for those who cannot make it! (We will provide more details at a later date)

The next social will be on April 26th at 1200 before the General Meeting!

The community is invited to attend a remembrance service honoring the life and legacy of Tony Chuy, Past Commander and long-time member of American Legion Lt. B. R. Kimlau Chinese Memorial Post 1291. The service will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association Auditorium, co-sponsored by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association and the Kimlau Post.

Tony devoted his life to service, first to the nation as a U.S. Navy veteran during the Vietnam War and later through 21 years in the Naval Reserve. His dedication to the City of New York, with 28 years at the NYC Department of Correction, where he became the department’s first Chinese self-defense instructor and a strong advocate for Asian American officers as President of the DOC Asian Jade Society, reflects his inspiring commitment.

A respected martial arts master and cultural leader, Tony spent more than three decades promoting traditional Chinese martial arts, lion dance, and community heritage. As President of the CCBA at the time of his passing, and throughout his many years with the Kimlau Post, he worked tirelessly for both veterans and the Chinatown community. During the height of anti-Asian hate during COVID, he stepped forward to organize self-defense classes to help protect and empower the community.

Tony’s leadership, courage, and dedication left a lasting mark on the Legion and Chinatown. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy of service and community spirit will long be remembered. This memorial service offers a meaningful opportunity for friends, veterans, and community members to come together, honor his contributions, and celebrate his life.

Attire: Business Casual. Legionnaires are requested to bring their American Legion caps.
