In the 1600s and 1700s, Africans buried their loved ones at the African Burial Ground. Our National Park Service site consists of a visitor center and memorial.

All of our offerings are free of charge.

Due to maintenance to the building at the African Burial Ground National Monument, the visitor center and outdoor memorial will be closed on Sunday, May 3rd, 2026.

01/24/2026

On January 25, 2026, African Burial Ground National Monument will be closed due to inclement weather. The site will reopen on Wednesday, January 28th for normal operations.

Due to maintenance to the lobby at African Burial Ground National Monument, the visitor center and outdoor memorial will be closed on Saturday, January 24, 2026.

Join us for Kwanzaa at the African Burial Ground

Celebrate culture, community, and heritage with us in person on Friday, December 26, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

The program will feature:
- African Traditional Ceremony
- A Libation Honoring the Ancestors
- African Drumming Throughout the Event
- Dance Performances
- Live Music

We are back! African Burial Ground National Monument is happy to announce that we are open once again and this time with new hours of operations. The site will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

To enter the visitor center, enter through the Ted Weiss Building entrance located on the corner of Duane Street and Broadway. Once you pass through security, follow signs directing you towards the visitor center.

Be sure to chat with our rangers and volunteers staffing the site to learn about the story of the African Burial Ground National Monument. Thanks for your patience these last few weeks, we look forward to seeing you at the site!

The African Burial Ground Outdoor Memorial is Now Open!

We are pleased to share that the African Burial Ground Outdoor Memorial is now open to the public!

Visit us Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM to explore this historic site and honor the legacy of the Ancestors at the monument.
We can’t wait to welcome you!

The Visitor Center & Outdoor Memorial will be closed on Saturday June 14, 2025. The Visitor Center will reopen on his regular schedule June 17. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause on your visit to the site.

The outdoor grounds at the African Burial Ground National Monument will be closed until further notice. The Visitor Center will remain open during regular hours, Tuesday to Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM.
