Celebrating the start of the 2024 Dance Research Fellowship!
Last Friday we welcomed the new cohort at the annual Fellows Breakfast where they got to know the Dance Division librarians and staff, along with fellowship alumni.
During their six-month fellowship at the Library for the Performing Arts the fellows will focus their research on Mikhail Baryshnikov and his archive on the 50th anniversary of his arrival in the U.S.
Save the date on January 31, 2025 for our annual Dance Symposium where the fellows will be presenting their research projects!

On July 11th we celebrated the American Tap Dance Foundation and its indelible mark in the dance world. ATDF founding Artistic/Executive Director Tony Waag received a Lifetime Achievement Award and performance tributes from the tap community for his 24 years of service, leadership and inspiration.

On June 26, dance scholars Dyane Harvey-Salaam, Robin Becker and Dr. Carl Paris shared about the life and career of Eleo Pomare. With their personal anecdotes, each of them gave the audience a glimpse into the "university of Eleo", the movement language and creative spirit of the multi-disciplinary artist who even created costumes for his dance company. ICYMI the recording of this Dance Historian Is In can be seen onsite at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts on the 3rd floor.

Meet the 2024-2025 Dance Research Fellows!
During their six-month fellowship, they will focus their research on Mikhail Baryshnikov and his archive on the 50th anniversary of his arrival in the U.S.
The fellowship culminates with an opportunity to present their projects on January 31, 2025, at the Dance Division's annual Dance Symposium.

The Dance Division kicked off the summer season with Maria Torres and the history of the hustle dance!
On June 20, Maria was joined by members of the hustle dance community who had participated in her residency to share anecdotes from their early experiences with the dance form.
You can catch Maria again on July 10 for Dance Storytime at 11am and 1pm where she will highlight the dancing styles of Puerto Rico. Participants will listen to a story and have the chance to get up and try out their moves!

The Jerome Robbins Dance Division at New York Public Library for the Performing Arts is excited to welcome Jenai Cutcher as its new Assistant Curator. Jenai is a stalwart in the tap dance community, and her creative practice includes dancing, choreographing, teaching, writing, videography, archiving, and researching histories of dance to present in a variety of media.
Jenai has worked over the course of her career to preserve, archive, and bring to life dance history. She founded the Chicago Dance History Project, a digital archive of original and collected research, where she conducted more than 100 interviews and public events featuring hundreds of prominent individuals in the dance field. Additionally, she accessioned 50 collections donated from community members and digitized over 18,000 files including programs, photographs, and footage from the past seven decades.
We're excited to welcome Jenai to the team!
