Generations Connect in Glasgow

Generations United joined colleagues from around the world at the Global Intergenerational Congress in Glasgow, Scotland, September 29–October 1. Executive Director Kristen Kiefer and GU board member Mark L. Meridy, Executive Director of DOROT, presented to a packed room on quality intergenerational programming and meaningful connections across generations.

The gathering sparked new ideas and strengthened relationships among practitioners, researchers, and policymakers working to build healthier, more connected communities. Thank you to Alison Clyde and the Generations Working Together team for bringing the global intergenerational field together!

Something to remember on this Ageism Awareness Day: when we get to know people of different ages, stereotypes give way to understanding and genuine connection.

In a new impact report, feedback from teens and college students in our intergenerational programs shows a clear change in attitudes toward older adults. The intergenerational relationships formed at DOROT helped participants bridge their differences in years and rethink assumptions about growing older.

Both younger and older generations reported greater awareness of the benefits of intergenerational relationships. They described their relationships as reciprocal, where both generations give and receive.

Our programs intentionally upend the idea that younger people are volunteers and older adults are simply recipients. Everyone acts in service to each other and to the intergenerational community they build.

For artist Amy Tenenouser, making art is a powerful way to build community.

At her Painting & Collage workshop, the session began with introductions, giving participants a chance to get to know one another before creating. At the end of the class, everyone gathered to share their work.

“When everyone in the class sees everybody else’s work, that is usually a big moment,” says Tenenouser. “They learn from that. They see different ideas. They get excited. And I feel that really starts to build a sense of community. The more we meet, the more that community grows.”

Through programs like this, DOROT creates opportunities for older adults to learn something new, express themselves creatively, and build meaningful connections.

A big congratulations to Abigail Gomez, Program Coordinator for DOROT's Kosher Meals at Home program, along with Steve Delorenzo and Anthony "Tony" Matos, on being selected as this year's Citymeals on Wheels STAR Award honorees and recognized at last week's STAR Awards event at Bay Ridge Center. 🎉

Through her work, Abigail Gomez helps connect older adults with nutritious meals and vital support. Since 1986, Steve Delorenzo has been delivering meals to DOROT participants, providing not just nourishment, but meaningful human connection. Alongside Anthony "Tony" Matos, he has built trusted relationships with older adults who look forward to their visits each week. Together, Abby, Steve, and Tony exemplify the compassion, dedication, and sense of community that make DOROT's work possible.

Join us in celebrating Abby, Steve, and Tony on this well-deserved recognition!

Starting October 1, readers across the country will dive into How to Know a Person by David Brooks and gather weekly to explore the skills that strengthen communities: curiosity, meaningful conversation, and genuine listening. Together, we'll learn new ways to build deeper connections and foster a greater sense of belonging. 📚💜

Last Day to Double Your Gift! đź’ś

As we continue this season of reflection and community, we're reminded of the importance of caring for one another.

Right now, every dollar you give will be matched, helping DOROT bring connection, companionship, and a sense of belonging to older adults during the holiday season.

Because no one should feel alone during a time meant for community.
