MAS is grateful for the life and contributions of our former director Margot Wellington—a New Yorker fiercely devoted to the betterment of our city. It is our hope that we honor Margot’s legacy each day by carrying out the MAS initiatives that she so helped shape. Through Jane’s Walk and our tours program, we invite the public to engage with our city at street level. On the advocacy front, MAS encourages investment in our built environment and preservation and adaptive reuse over demolition. That way, New Yorkers can enjoy well-maintained public spaces and a future that pays homage to our rich history—not only to protect our city’s cultural heritage, but to ensure a more sustainable future for all of us. This Wednesday, June 4, from 10:00am-1:00 PM, please join the Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) and the Pride Center of Staten Island (Pride Center of Staten Island) on at the Alice Austen House Museum (Alice Austen House Museum) for an Enduring Culture Spotlight event.
This interactive event celebrates the q***r histories of Staten Island, from the legacy of barrier-breaking photographer Alice Austen (1866-1952) to the stories of Staten Island’s LGBTQ+ communities today. Together, we will take a guided tour of the museum grounds using polaroid cameras to capture our identities and memories in relation to the space. Afterwards, we will share and reflect on how these photographs continue the long tradition of documenting personal histories to tell a broader story about community and place.
Refreshments will be provided. We will be walking on the grounds for about 45 minutes, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
