$40: Free Tote + T-Shirt We are a group of professionals, community members, health providers across the continuum, and young people working together to build resilient communities that are better prepared to prevent and respond to addiction and mental health related crises on Staten Island. Our coalition recognizes that a variety of social, psychological, cultural, biological, and spiritual factors need to be considered when addressing behavioral health issues and is dedicated to centering the demographic groups that are most impacted. We put community measures in place to ensure that children and adolescents have social support, personal resilience, and substance-free coping options from youth through young adulthood. This includes initiatives such as collaborating with local establishments to host sober & inclusive community events, educating parents about how to speak with their kids about substance use, and providing training to prevent and intervene in crises from opioid overdose to suicidal ideation. TYSA holds annual legislative briefings to advocate to our elected officials, using local data to show where gaps remain. We also make sure that people are aware of state-licensed programs to reach out to for help if they do have a behavioral health concern, and maintain relationships with these organizations.

Did you know you should use both 311 to document the issue of illegal alcohol sales and report the issue to the State Liquor Authority?

311 logs the complaint for the city, you should also file a complaint with the New York State Liquor Authority online or by calling them at (518) 474-3114.

The SLA handles administrative penalties like fines or license suspensions.

The role of the adults in young people’s lives cannot be overstated. We know young people’s perceptions of alcohol are shaped by the environment they are in and adults have a part to play in normalizing conversations around safety and alcohol. You don’t have to be a parent to be responsible for the safety of young people - retailers also have a responsibility to our community to help keep young people safe!

If you are a retailer and are interested in an RBS training DM us or email us at [email protected]!

DID YOU KNOW?
20.26% of youth surveyed didn’t know the risk of fentanyl use.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid up to 50 times stronger than he**in and 100 times stronger than morphine. Even small amounts can be deadly.

While the percentage of youth who felt there was no risk associated with fentanyl use was considerably smaller at 2.29% that misunderstanding can still cost lives!

DID YOU KNOW?
Between 18-21% of young people surveyed didn’t know the risks associated with using drugs such as pain relievers, stimulants, tranquilizers, or opioids.

While NYC teens may not be misusing prescription pain medication as frequently - it still happens!

Education and conversations help mitigate that risk. Talk to your kids or young people in your life. Let them know they can also ask a doctor privately if they have any questions.

Visit the link in our bio for more resources on how to have these vital conversations!

DID YOU KNOW? Anyone can carry naloxone. Anyone can save a life!

Naloxone can reverse an opioid overdose and also does not harm the recipient, even if an overdose is not actively occurring.

In NYC, free naloxone and overdose response trainings are available through registered Opioid Overdose Prevention Programs (OOPPs) and NYC Health. We also offer them to our community here in SI! Check the link in our bio to learn more.

Did you know: it was a topic of conversation since 2023 that Staten Islanders had to address the health disparities we were seeing in our communities. The Opioid Settlement Funds initially left out Staten Island but the tireless advocacy of our partners and community members made it happen. Now we have two locations: Community Health Action of SI food pantry and ACIL food locker.

There are often many material barriers to behavioral and mental health in NYC. We chose to have the conversations necessary to create the lasting change we need to see for Staten Islanders. Please check our resources in bio for more info!

DID YOU KNOW?
Staten Island previously held the second-highest rate of overdose deaths among the 5 boroughs in NYC, but has improved to the second-lowest in recent years! From 2023 to 2024, Staten Island had the largest decrease in overdose death rate of any NYC borough.

However, in a survey conducted by TYSA, more young adults in Staten Island shared that they believe he**in poses a great or moderate risk compared to fentanyl, which overlooks that fentanyl can be up to 50x more potent than he**in. Because of fentanyl’s extreme potency, even a small exposure can be dangerous.

Knowledge Saves Lives.

Progress matters, and we know that knowledge is key.

Misinformation, isolation, and stigma are detrimental in improving behavioral health in our communities.

Honest, supportive connection and community are how we can make Staten Island a place that facilitates positive behavioral health and promotes prevention!
