The Consulate General of Nigeria, New York, participated in the maiden flag-raising ceremony held to commemorate the 65th Independence Anniversary of Nigeria at the Unity Fountain, City of Yonkers, New York, on Monday, 6th October, 2025. The event marked the first time that the City of Yonkers formally recognized Nigeria’s Independence Day through an official ceremony.

Mr. Umaru Usman Baba, Consul, Immigration and Community Relations, represented the Consulate at the event. Dignitaries in attendance included Mr. Mike Spano, Mayor of Yonkers, Mr. Shane Osinloye, Deputy Mayor of the neighboring City of New Rochelle and Mrs. Subomi Macaulay, founder of Subomi Children Corporation and chief facilitator of the event.

Highlight of the event included the ceremonial hoisting of the Nigerian national flag as well as presentation of a Proclamation to the Consulate General of Nigeria in New York, by Mayor Mike Spano, in commemoration of the historic maiden flag-raising ceremony. The Proclamation formally underscored the positive relations between the City and the Nigerian community.

Thousands of Nigerians and friends of Nigeria from across the United States gathered in New York City to celebrate the nation’s 65th Independence Anniversary at the annual Independence Day Parade and Awards Dinner, organized by the Organization for the Advancement of Nigeria (OAN) in collaboration with the Consulate General of Nigeria, New York.

The 65th Independence Day celebrations featured the Annual Awards Dinner on Friday 3rd October, 2025, were notable Nigerians who have contributed and made meaningful impact on the Nigerian Community were honored.

The Parade held on 4th October, 2025, was led by Ambassador Abubakar Jidda, Consul General of Nigeria in New York, and graced by Her Excellency Amina J. Mohammed, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, alongside other distinguished Nigerians and friends of the country.

The 2025 Parade procession, held along the iconic Madison Avenue, featured vibrant floats and displays spanning more than ten city blocks, culminating at Madison Square Garden. The celebration continued with a rich cultural showcase featuring traditional performances, music, and exhibitions; a true display of Nigeria’s unity in diversity.
