Nilka Martell, founder of Loving the Bronx, is leading a generational effort to cap the Cross Bronx Expressway in her Parkchester neighborhood. Nilka’s organizing has always centered around the community and bringing people along with her. Her journey started on her block, with her kids and continued when she transformed her local park. Today, she’s channeling that same energy into capping the Cross Bronx: a project that would reduce noise and air pollution while reconnecting communities divided by one of the first urban interstates built through a dense city.

This is part of an ongoing project documenting women and nonbinary organizers across New York City. Over the past six years I’ve witnessed the depth and persistence of this labor as a force for change in our city. These organizers consistently transform their communities through planning, advocacy, fundraising, and presence. Much of this work goes unseen and uncelebrated, yet it creates lasting change. This project documents and uplifts this work so others can follow where they’ve led. Organizing work is kinkeeping in action, a form of care that stretches past the household and sustains broader communities.

For my photography friends...
I recently have been volunteering as a Photography Coordinator for the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez campaign. On Election Day I met an incredible woman, Kerri Evelyn Harris, who is running for Senate in Delaware. She doesn't have a photo team like we do and wanted to share here in case anyone knows politically active photographers in DE that might be interested in volunteering! I'm happy to put them in touch and to answer any questions they might have about the work.
You can have them email me at [email protected]
Thanks all! Have a great one!!

It’s been an honor and a privilege to document and the movement behind her. I can’t wait to learn from the incredible people in this campaign. I’m truly humbled to be able to create this work. If you are feeling powerless in the face of the news and state of our country these days get involved and engage in any way you can. Be present in your community. We are stronger together.

I include portrait sessions with all my full day wedding packages so my couples can get to know how I work behind the camera, and so they can get some non cell phone selfies too!
