Origin in Latin America and the Caribbean

September 28 Day of Action for Access to Safe and Legal Abortion has its origin in Latin America and the Caribbean where women’s groups have been mobilizing around September 28 the last two decades to demand their governments to decriminalize abortion, to provide access to safe and affordable abortion services and to end stigma and discrimination towards women who choose to have an abortion.
The original name of the campaign in Latin America and the Caribbean is Campaña 28 de Septiembre por la Despenalización del Ab**to, which continues up to this day growing in force and commitment on the part of women’s rights activists in the region. The date—September 28—was chosen in commemoration of the abolition of slavery in Brazil, which is now remembered as the day of the “free womb,” demanding safe and legal abortion for all women.

Get Repost App • Becca Rea-Tucker “Husband and Father”. A lot of the grossest most misogynistic comments I get are from recently married men/new fathers. My theory is that since they are no longer “allowed” to openly denigrate women due to the new role, they do it online instead.

And an alternate theory: since they now have families (read: people they think they have ownership over), they also believe they should exercise power over every woman and child in existence.

The commitment is to stay learning and listening and following the leaders 🍎📓

Get • Caption: Before Reproductive Justice was coined (1994) and SisterSong was even formed (1997), we had the Combahee River Collective (1974). Named after a raid led by Harriet Tubman in 1863 by the Combahee River that freed more than 750 enslaved people, the Combahee River Collective was made up of Black women who were radical organizers and socialists, many who were Black le****ns. These women refused to flatten the complexities of their lives, lived at the intersection of race, class, sexuality, and gender. Fed up with organizing in spaces that couldn’t acknowledge their whole selves, they published a statement that would change how we organize for liberation forever.

Written primarily by Demitra Frazier, Beverly Smith, and Barbara Smith, The Combahee River Collective Statement challenged readers to consider white supremacy, homophobia, patriarchy, and classism as different arms of the same beast. While ‘none of us are free until all of us are free’ is a common phrase now, it took Black leaders being decades ahead of their peers to get us here. Black women continue to lead the charge in getting us closer towards Black Liberation and Reproductive Justice! The month may be ending but Black History has always been the future.
