You must be at least 18 years of age to apply for a Security Guard Registration Card in New York, and have never been convicted of a serious crime. You also have to either be a citizen of the United States or resident alien (hold a green card). You are required to show proof that you have completed the 8-hour pre-assignment security guard training class before you apply. In order to receive your security guard certification, you must complete two training courses . Before applying to the Department of State for a Security Guard Registration Card, you must take an 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course. The pre-assignment course covers important information that everyone working as a security officer must know. At Liberty Security Training Institute, you will also be taught how to prepare a resume or application and interview for a position as a security officer, as well as how to navigate the requirements for fingerprinting and filing with New York State. When you have completed your training, our placement service may be able to help you get a job to start your career as a licensed security guard. Once you have secured a position as a security guard, you must complete a 16 Hour On-the-Job Training Class for Security Officers within 90 days. This class covers the duties of a security officer and procedures relevant to a work site. The initial 8 hour and 16 hour courses only have to be taken once, but you are required to take an 8 Hour Annual In-service Training Course for Security Officers every year that you work as a security guard.
