Translating isn’t betraying: it’s writing. In this two-hour translation workshop, with technical and improvisational activities, we’ll learn the foundations of a craft that is, above all, a way to read the world and rewrite it.

Please note that this workshop will be facilitated in Spanish in the Kunitz Conference Room at Poets House.

Indigenous Futures: The James Welch Prize for Indigenous Poets: Readings with Alexis Clifton, Casandra López, and Santee Frazier | In-Person & Zoom | Tuesday | October 27 | 7pm-8:30pm

Join us in celebrating the winners of the sixth edition of the James Welch Prize, an initiative established by Poetry Northwest to recognize two outstanding poems by Indigenous U.S. poets. With readings from this year’s judge, Santee Frazier, and winning poets Casandra López and Alexis Clifton.

Poetry Northwest’s James Welch Prize for Indigenous Poets is named for Blackfeet and Gros Ventre writer James Welch, whose early poems were featured in Poetry Northwest and who went on to become one of the region’s most important writers, credited with helping to lead the Native American Renaissance in the ’60s and ’70s.

Presented in partnership with Poetry Northwest, In-Na-Po (Indigenous Nations Poets), and People’s Poetry Gathering partners.

Seminar: Listening to Emily Dickinson with Annie Finch
Remote Seminar | 5 Wednesdays | Nov 4 - Dec 9 | 7-8:30pm ET
Nov 4, 2026 | 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
$200.00 – $225.00

To fully hear a great poem requires a triple alertness of body, mind, and the connection between them. That is the spirit in which we will invite Emily Dickinson’s poems into this seminar. Listening to Dickinson’s meter, stanza, imagery, diction, grammar, tone, capitalization, rhyme and more, we will discover the synapses where her meaning and form meet—places where the poem comes to life again over and over, as if re-created in that instant. By treating each syllable and stress as part of the sacred temple of the poem’s body, we will find secrets that can never be put into words—not only about Dickinson—and about poetry—but also about ourselves. No previous experience with Dickinson or poetry is required.

Required Text(s):
Emily Dickinson’s Poems As She Preserved Them, Ed. Cristianne Miller
and/or
The Poems of Emily Dickinson Reading Edition, Ed. R.W. Franklin

Please note that this class will not meet on Wednesday, November 25.

This remote class will take place on Zoom. The Zoom link will be emailed to you by a staff member in the week leading up to the class start date.

All are welcome, space is limited. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. Please email [email protected] with any questions. By attending or participating in this program, you agree to abide by our Community Agreement.
