USS Harder was found in May 2024 after nearly 80 years on the seabed. The wreck was located by the Lost 52 Project working with the U.S. Navy’s Naval History and Heritage Command. She sits upright with her keel largely intact at a depth of more than 3,000 feet in the South China Sea near the Philippines. High-resolution photogrammetry scans confirmed her identity and clearly show depth charge damage aft of the conning tower. The site is now recognized as a protected war grave under U.S. law.
USS Harder was sunk on 24 August 1944 during her sixth war patrol after being hit by Japanese depth charges. All 79 crewmen were lost. Earlier in 1944, she became one of the most successful U.S. submarines of the war under Cmdr. Samuel D. Dealey, sinking three Japanese destroyers and damaging others in daring close attacks that disrupted Japanese naval plans before the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Dealey was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, and the submarine earned six battle stars and a Presidential Unit Citation. Today, the wreck stands as a direct link to those final moments and a memorial to the crew who never returned.
