Ms. Odette C. Rose, Intern
My Experience at South Bronx Concerned Citizens
My Experience at S.B.C.C has been an amazing ride. I started working here in the summer of July, 2014. The internship coordinator in my school made it seem as if it was going to be a piece of cake. That was not the case, when I got to S.B.C.C I became overwhelmed with all the tasks that Ms. Noelle told me needed to be done, but then as the program started, I realize I can do the task with no problem. There was 7 other interns helping with the daily routine, the routine started as soon as I walked in at 9am, first, we gave them breakfast. Next, we taught them the basic educational skills. Then we took them to lunch. After that, they got a chance to play in the park, they either played in the park or in the sprinklers. We then brought them back to the office, where they changed back into dry clothes and ate snack. The rest of the day was theirs.
I’ve only been at one other internship besides S.B.C.C and I can say, I’ve never had such a strong bond with my other employer. The bond I share with Ms. Noelle and Mr. Peter is very strong. I appreciate how they allow me to be myself and do as I please to make the rainy days as fun as possible for the kids. If I needed anything the never hesitated to give me what I needed, if I ask Ms. Noelle for money for arts and crafts, or materials for the office, she was willing to give it to me without a problem. They loved my work ethic enough to pay for my transportation to come back after my internship program was done. On days I stayed late, Ms. Noelle was generous enough to give me a ride to my second bus stop. Working here I learned team work, tutoring skills, management skills, and have grown as a person. They see and commend you if you are working hard.
When I returned in the fall to continue my internship, they rewarded me by give me the supervisory position. I was put in charge of all incoming interns. It was my responsibility to make sure they were doing what needed to be done. They put all their trust in me and I showed them that they were doing the right thing. I enjoy waking up every morning, knowing I’m going to my second home, a place where I feel comfortable, wanted, and appreciated. I have such an attachment with all the new kids that I help in the after-school. I love the look they kids give me when I teach them something new. I feel proud knowing that I am one of the people who helped the children understand difficult topic. I can honestly say I never thought about giving up or leaving my internship site, because I know I can never find another internship site that would make me feel like I belong there. South Bronx Concerned Citizens isn’t just an internship to me, it’s my family and I will stick with them as long as possible.
Ms.Diana Castellanos, SBCC Intern
As an Intern of South Bronx Concern Citizen Corp. I feel thrilled for the wonderful opportunity Ms. Noelle and Mr. Peter have gave me. Throughout this experience I have learned the leadership potential that I can bring to my community and the importance of working as a team. Even though I haven’t had other work experiences, this organization has provided me with the opportunity of interacting with children and young adults, as well as becoming responsible young women to society and myself. I am truly pleased with the opportunity as my first internship because it has given me a huge advantages to pursuit my future career. What I have enjoyed the most is working with a group of wonderful people who have become part of my life and part of my life choices. Though I can honestly say that the best part of working in S.B.C.C is enforcing your knowledge by helping children with their academics and activities.
Another experience that I have acquired from the organisation is taking the role of a teacher. Also, its has taught how to be responsible. Last but not least, throughout this amazing opportunity as an intern I have been able to give back to my community as a South Bronx Citizen and have learned many valuable life worthy experiences who are now part of the steps of becoming a successful leader as a Civil Rights Lawyer. I believe South Bronx Concern Citizen Corp. Has been a huge turning point in my life, because I have learned that we may face obstacles but no matter what you keep your head up high and reach your goals. I never expected to have such an important role as a counselor. Not only was I able to give leadership examples to children but to other interns as well. Working with such wonderful people have made me realize the importance of my education I have been able to see role models who have made an impact in my school performance and my responsibilities as a student. Something that I admired the most is that I was able to feel like home. And most importantly, have the best experience as my first internship.
