U-haul trucks are usually used for moving. Every county in the Finger Lakes region have experienced a surge in commercial burglaries. The Village of Newark, New York 14513 has experienced this surge. The preferred method of committing these burglaries is using a U-haul truck or other commercial type trucks to commit these burglaries.

The burglars are usually operating at night. They drive around the neighborhood looking for usually a vacant commercial property. Once a vacant property is found, they get to work.

I ask that if any community member sees any moving or commercial trucks either circling the area, parked at a vacant structure, or being accompanied by a passenger car, please call 911.

Recently, there's been an increase in school age kids coming to the Village mostly from out of our county, and "exploring" our vacant buildings. Information received is that somewhere on social media, the Village of Newark is listed as a place where people can explore vacant buildings. Recommendations are made and the vacant Newark Garden Hotel is at the top of the list.

Last week, two teenagers decided ro "explore" the Newark Garden Hotel. One teenager received a significant laceration to his upper extremity as the building is vacant and full of hazards. Both teenagers were arrested for criminal trespass.

The Village of Newark Newark, NY Police Department understand the inquisitive nature of teenagers however, going into a vacant building with many hazards is a recipe for a terrible outcome. I ask the community at large to monitor our children and offer them constructive things to do to not only keep them away from tbe criminal justice system but also keep them safe.

The Village of Newark, NY Police Department received a report that someone called them with the phone number of 315-331-3701 (Village of Newark PD #), indicating that bail had to be paid for a family member. The citizen, being astute immediately hung up and called Newark PD. This scam was not successful. If anyone calls you from a number associated with a legitimate business, Police Department, or any other number asking for money, gift cards, or anything of value, its a scam. Immediately hang up and call the police. Do not under any circumstances give these scammers any info at all. I want to thank tbe citizen who called to report this scam.

Since Monday August 3rd, Village of Newark PD received two delayed 911 calls indicating aggressive panhandlers. Both were in the same general area of S.Main St/E. Miller St and the Dollar General. One couple felt compelled to give the panhandler money. The ruse is needing money for gasoline.

Being generous is a wonderful thing however, if you don't feel safe with the interaction, do your best to remove yourself from that situation. I ask that you immediately call 911 to report any aggressive behavior. We would like to identify the individual or individuals and offer them services if appropriate. Thank you for your continued support of our Police Department.
