New Jersey Transit Police Lieutenant Sperlazza, invited as keynote speaker - New Jersey Public Safety Accreditation Coalition

Tuesday, September 29, 2026, Atlantic City, NJ: Lieutenant Joseph Sperlazza was invited to serve as the Keynote Speaker to open the New Jersey Public Safety Accreditation Coalition Annual Conference.

During his presentation, Lt. Sperlazza spoke about the importance of helping officers understand the importance of why a policy exists to help support the highest level of public service. Lt. Sperlazza also discussed his involvement in a comprehensive overhaul of the New Jersey Transit Police Department’s Use of Force Policy, including enhancements to our agency’s response, reporting, supervisory responsibilities, and meaningful review process.

Lt. Sperlazza also encouraged fellow law enforcement leaders to continually evaluate not only whether their agencies meet established standards, but how they can push beyond those standards to better prepare their personnel and serve their communities.

A Badge worn in Support, a visible sign of hope

You may have noticed New Jersey Transit Police Officers wearing special badges throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We hope these badges serve as a symbol of support for everyone, and every family affected by this disease.

This month, we honor loved ones lost, celebrate survivors, stand with those currently fighting breast cancer, and encourage early screening and detection to save lives.

Together, we wear these badges to raise awareness and to remind all affected that they are not alone. - NJTPD

Then and now. One mission: Protecting the traveling public

The New Jersey Transit Police Department K9 Unit was established in 2002, in response to the attacks on September 11, 2001. Initially, the unit consisted of three handlers and their canine partners.

Today, the unit operates with 16 teams deployed throughout the statewide system. Despite the increased presence, our K9 teams can use your help!

If you notice any unattended bags or packages, suspicious vehicles, or anything that doesn’t feel right, report it to us. Your report can help NJTPD Officers and K9 units quickly ensure the safety of our NJ TRANSIT system.

Text us at 65873 or call us at 1-888-TIPS-NJT (1-888-847-7658) **Always dial 911 for emergencies**

New Jersey Transit Police Officers recognized for outstanding achievements

For police officers, the road to the badge is challenging by design. Demanding academy training helps prepare us for rigorous career responsibilities. Several of our most recently graduated officers stood out throughout their academy training and received top awards. Recently, the officers were recognized at the NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors Meeting.

(Left to right)

Officer Vanwagoner received the Academic Award for the highest average score for all exams (Essex County Police Academy, June 10, 2026)

Officer Kallman received the Hudson County Chiefs of Police Association Leadership Award. This award recognizes a recruit who demonstrates strong leadership, professionalism, discipline, character, and the ability to positively influence fellow officers. (Hudson County Police Academy, June 17, 2026)

Officer Veloso-Lima received the Academic Award for the highest average score for all exams (Hudson County Public Safety Training Center, June 17, 2026)

Officer Sethman received the Directors Award. This award recognizes a recruit who consistently demonstrates an exceptional attitude, strong character, professionalism, discipline, leadership, dedication, and overall performance throughout the police academy. (Passaic County Police Academy, May 5, 2026)

To each officer, we say congratulations! Keep up the great work!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To help raise awareness, our NJTPD shield and pink ribbon will be displayed on social media throughout the month. When detected early, breast cancer has a significantly higher survival rate.

To join us in raising awareness, share this post and display this shield on your account!

This month is an important time to honor survivors, remember those we have lost, and promote early screening and detection to save lives.

For more information regarding Breast Cancer Awareness Month and early screening, visit the American Cancer Society website at cancer.org or the Susan G. Komen for the Cure website at https://ww5.komen.org/ .

Rain or shine, safeguarding a historic run for a great Cause!

This past weekend, the New Jersey Transit Police Department was proud to help provide security for a unique 5k race held on the New Jersey Turnpike Helix in Secaucus. The NJ Turnpike Five wound up the helix towards the tollbooths and looped back to Secaucus Junction for an unforgettable route. Instead of cars, the roadway was filled with runners. All in support of Special Olympics New Jersey (SONJ).

In addition to our protective posture, we were honored to cheer on a running member of our NJTPD family. This race was dedicated to the late New Jersey Transit Police Sergeant Alan West and the late Secaucus Police Lieutenant Thomas T.J. Malanka. Both of whom are remembered with honor.

Special Olympics New Jersey provides year-round sports training, competition, leadership opportunities, and health screenings to thousands of athletes, all at no cost to them, thanks to fundraising events like the NJ Turnpike Five.
