Delaware Environmental Institute DENIN is an interdisciplinary research and education institute at the University of Delaware.

DENIN supports cutting-edge research relevant to critical environmental issues facing the state of Delaware and the nation — climate change, sea-level rise, habitat loss and degradation, pollution, nutrient cycling, and water quality — generating new knowledge to underpin sound environmental policies for the future. Our research efforts are especially focused on two broad areas: 1) environmental processes at the land-air-water interfaces collectively referred to as the Critical Zone, and 2) environmental forecasting and remediation. The institute fosters a culture of scholarship that leverages the combined talents of our affiliated faculty and adds value to environmental research, education, and outreach efforts through collaborative working groups, joint proposal development, and synergistic resource coordination. Our vision is to develop an internationally recognized community of faculty, staff, and students in environmental science, engineering and policy, supported by state-of-the-art facilities and an effective management process, who can compete successfully for interdisciplinary grants, provide research-based educational opportunities, promote economic development, and contribute to the environmental health of the state, the region, and the world. This page is administered by Beth Chajes, DENIN communications manager.

Meet Austin Morgan! 🧪 ⏱️

A PhD candidate in Microbiology, Austin’s research in the Blenner Lab aims to use organisms to help solve large environmental problems. Austin is developing an automatic “kill-switch” technology that can be encoded into genetically engineered microbes. By giving these microbes a built-in lifespan, they can safely break down pollutants, detect pathogens, or help crops acquire sufficient nutrients, before self-destructing when finished. This work could remove a major roadblock in environmental biotech, as microbes currently run the risk of disrupting ecosystems when released into the wild unchecked.

Through research, any Delaware student can help protect our coasts! 🌊

Graduate researchers recently showed DelTech students how their diverse research projects all play major roles in combatting flooding and sea level rise. Connecting students with local science is opening doors for transformative work for our coastal communities!

Thanks to all our panelists and the Project WiCCED team for introducing their work to emerging researchers!

Meet Nusrat Mohana! 🗺️ 🕊️

Nusrat conducted research in the Department of Geography and Spatial Sciences at the University of Delaware. A human geographer, her work rethinks displacement, vulnerability, and climate change by centering the lived experiences of vulnerable communities. She examines how climate precarity is always shaped by structures of power, asking not only who is vulnerable, but whose vulnerability is allowed to be seen. She also brings this interdisciplinary lens to questions of environmental justice across contexts where displacement, gender, and ecological crisis converge.
