The New Jersey Schools Development Authority is funding the project, which will include a 198,000-square-foot building serving more than 1,000 students.

Superintendent León joined the New Jersey Schools Development Authority (SDA) and state and local leaders to celebrate the final stage of work on the new University High School in Newark’s South Ward.

The new school will have approximately 198,000 square feet and will serve up to 1,080 students in grades 9 through 12. Site preparation is underway, with building construction anticipated to begin in fall 2027.

Superintendent León served as University High School’s principal when a new school building was expected two decades ago.

Thank you to the SDA and our state and city partners for helping bring this long-awaited investment to Newark’s students.

Today, Newark Public Schools celebrated the official opening of New Media High School – the district’s 12th new school since Superintendent Leon was appointed in 2018 – with a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring students, educators, industry partners, and state and local leaders.

Led by Principal Steven Oliver, students are already getting behind the cameras and creating original content. Through partnerships with the Entertainment Industry Foundation, Great Point Studios, and other organizations, they are preparing for opportunities in film, television, and media.

Congratulations to our founding Class of 2030! We can’t wait to see the stories you’ll tell.

Nine police officers from Puerto Rico recently visited Barringer High School for a candid conversation with 113 students, including 34 uniformed members of the school’s Junior ROTC program.

The officers shared stories from decades of service in traffic enforcement, narcotics investigations, maritime operations, specialized units and community outreach. But their most important messages went far beyond law enforcement:

-Take your education seriously.
-Stay disciplined and work hard.
-Value your family.
-Avoid drugs and negative peer pressure.
-Never let anyone tell you what you cannot accomplish.

The event followed the district’s launch of Police and Fire Career Pathways last April.

Award of Merit for Photography: Walking The Path’s Director Wali Thomas congratulates a program graduate’s transition to employment with the district.
