Last evening, around 6:00 p.m., the New Castle County 911 Center received a mutual aid request from the Cecil County Department of Emergency Services 911 Center for the New Castle County Special Operations Surface Water Rescue Team (SWRT) and Dive Team.

Teams were requested to respond to the Susquehanna River in the area of Rock Run Landing Road following reports of a missing kayaker who had capsized. Multiple personnel and specialized equipment were deployed to the scene.

Upon arrival, search efforts were conducted utilizing rescue boats, aviation assets, and side-scan sonar technology in an extensive search of the area.

Unfortunately, as multiple thunderstorms moved into the area, deteriorating weather conditions created unsafe operating conditions for personnel on the water. In the interest of responder safety, the search was suspended for the evening.

This evening, during the severe storms, the New Castle County Special Operations Surface Water Rescue Team responded to multiple incidents involving vehicles in floodwaters across the county.

As a reminder, never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. It only takes a small amount of moving water to sweep a vehicle away.
