A Major Step Forward for Newberry County Law Enforcement
Last night, Newberry County Council approved the expenditure of funds to move forward with a new Records Management System (RMS) for Newberry County.
This is an important investment in public safety. The new system will be utilized by all local law enforcement agencies operating in Newberry County and will greatly improve the sharing and communication of information between agencies.
Our previous system had become outdated, developed significant problems, and ultimately was no longer supported by the vendor. The RMS is not simply a convenience—it is an essential system used to maintain law enforcement and jail records and to meet state and federal reporting requirements.
The new system will also provide significant improvements in:
• Law enforcement dispatching
• Fire, rescue and EMS communications
• Sharing information between public safety agencies
• Mapping and location technology
• Live crime and incident reporting
• Law enforcement records and case management
• Jail records and detention information
And importantly, once implementation is complete, we will finally be able to resume posting jail booking photographs and jail logs, something that has been unavailable because of the dysfunctional portions of the previous system.
So, why did this take so long?
The answer is complicated.
Before the County could move forward, we had to go through the required process of identifying qualified vendors, reviewing proposals and bids, ensuring the system met state and federal requirements, and satisfying the County’s purchasing and procurement requirements. We also had to make certain that the system would actually meet the needs of the various public safety agencies that will depend upon it.
Another significant hurdle was financing the system.
I want to specifically thank Senator Ronnie Cromer for helping the Sheriff’s Office obtain assistance through a community investment that will help make this important project possible.
There is still work ahead. Implementation will take several months as the existing data is transferred and merged into the new system, the various agencies configure their portions of the system, and employees receive the necessary training.
We appreciate the patience of the citizens of Newberry County as we have worked through this process. This has been a frustrating issue for our office and, particularly, for the citizens used the jail pictures.
AS ALWAYS, YOU CAN STILL SEE THE LAST SEVEN DAYS OF BOOKINGS FROM MONDAYS ON THE WEB SITE.
But we are now moving forward with a system that will better serve law enforcement, our public safety partners, and—most importantly—the people of Newberry County.
We are finally moving in the right direction
