As National Forensic Science Week comes to an end, we’re reminded of why this work means so much to us.

Forensic science is often thought of as evidence, science, laboratories, and investigations. And while all of those things are an important part of what we do, there is so much more behind it.

Behind every case is a person.
Behind every person is a family.
And behind every investigation are people who care deeply about getting the answers right.

As death investigators, we have the privilege, and the responsibility, of bringing science, compassion, and dedication together during some of the most difficult moments a family will ever face. We may not always have the answers families are hoping for, but we work every day to provide them with the truth, treat their loved ones with dignity, and never lose sight of the person behind the case number.

This week has given us an opportunity to celebrate not only forensic science, but the incredible people who make it possible. From forensic pathologists and laboratory professionals to law enforcement, EMS, hospitals, SLED, fellow death investigators, and so many others. We are grateful for the partnerships and relationships that make this work possible.

We are proud to be part of a profession that continues to learn, grow, and evolve. But most of all, we are proud to serve Newberry County and the families who trust us during some of the hardest days of their lives.

National Forensic Science Week may be coming to an end, but our commitment to this work doesn’t end with the week. We will continue showing up, continuing to learn, continuing to ask questions, and continuing to serve with compassion.

From our family at the Newberry County Coroner’s Office, thank you to everyone who stands alongside us in this work.

Day 2 of 2026 National Forensic Science Week:

Okay okay, enough talk about forensic science, you can’t talk about it if you don’t even know what it is… so… WHAT IS FORENSIC SCIENCE?

When you hear “forensic science,” you might think of DNA, fingerprints, or a crime lab. But forensic science is much bigger than that!

Simply put, forensic science is using science and evidence to help answer questions about a crime, death, or investigation.

It includes many different fields and professionals, such as:

🧬 DNA & Biology
🔎 Crime Scene Investigators
💀 Forensic Pathologists & Medicolegal Death Investigators
🩺 Forensic Toxicologists
🖐️ Fingerprint Examiners
🔫 Fi****ms Examiners
💻 Digital Forensics
🦴 Forensic Anthropologists
🔥 Fire & Explosion Investigators
🦷 Forensic Odontologists
📄 Document Examiners
…and many MANY more!

Every specialty has a different role, but they all have something in common: using science, evidence, and facts to help uncover what happened.

Forensic science isn't just what you see on TV. It's a team of professionals working behind the scenes to help provide answers, support investigations, and ultimately serve our communities.

This week, September 20-26, 2026, the Newberry County Coroner’s Office proudly recognizes National Forensic Science Week and the science, dedication, and countless hours that go into seeking answers when they matter most.

Forensic science is more than evidence, fingerprints, DNA, or laboratory analysis. It is about finding answers, supporting investigations, serving families, and helping bring clarity to the unknown. From the scene, to the laboratory, every detail matters. Every piece of evidence has a story to tell, and every answer can make a difference.

As death investigators, we are honored to work alongside the many professionals whose knowledge and expertise contribute to the medicolegal death investigation process.

This week, join us as we celebrate the people behind the science and the purpose behind the work. This week we will once again introduce you to each of us in the office, and some surprise guests.

Happy National Forensic Science Week from the Newberry County Coroner’s Office!💜
