Thank you to City Council for a proclamation declaring this week as Public Power Week in the City of Newberry! The proclamation was signed by Mayor Foster Senn at the September City Council meeting.

The proclamation reads:

WHEREAS, we, the citizens of the City of Newberry, place a high value on local choice over community services and therefore have chosen to operate a community-owned, not-for-profit electric utility and, as customers and owners of our electric utility, have a direct say in utility operations and policies;

WHEREAS, the City of Newberry Utilities Department provides our homes, businesses, schools, and social service and local government agencies with reliable, efficient, and safe electricity, employing sound business practices designed to ensure the best possible service at not-for-profit rates;

WHEREAS, City of Newberry Utilities are a valuable community asset that contributes to the well-being of local citizens through energy efficiency, customer service, environmental protection, economic development, and safety awareness;

WHEREAS, the City of Newberry has also taken on additional stewardship for our community's information infrastructure through a broadband network expanding community and economic development opportunities;

WHEREAS, the City of Newberry is a dependable and trustworthy institution whose local operation provides many consumer protections and continues to make our community a better place to live and work;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: that the City of Newberry Utilities Department will continue to work to bring low-cost, safe, reliable, and sustainable electricity to community homes and businesses just as it has since 1896, the year when the utility was created to serve all the citizens of the City of Newberry; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: that the week of October 4-11 be designated Public Power Week to recognize the people behind public power at the City of Newberry for their contributions to the community and to educate customer-owners, policymakers, and employees on the benefits of public power; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: that our community joins hands with more than 2,000 other public power systems in the United States, all working to build strong communities, in this celebration of public power.

Today marks the beginning of Public Power Week!

But - what is Public Power Week?

Public Power Week is an annual observance coordinated by the American Public Power Association, the voice of not-for-profit, community-owned utilities that power 2,000 cities and towns nationwide.

As a full-service utility, all aspects of our department are celebrated this week!

Join us in recognizing the people behind Newberry Utilities for their contributions to the community. We'll also use this time to help educate our customers on the benefits of public utility systems! Stay tuned!
