This letter was submitted to the Board of Education members prior to the September 15, 2026, Board of Education meeting for their review and consideration.
Dear Board President and Members of the Board,
I hope this letter finds you all in good health.
I am writing on behalf of many concerned CSEA members to raise serious concerns regarding staffing throughout the district following the opening of the new Career and Technical Education (CTE) building.
As the district prepared to open this new facility, I repeatedly asked one simple question: How was the district planning to staff the CTE building? To this day, I have not received an answer. Unfortunately, the results have made the answer clear.
Rather than hiring the additional staff needed to operate a building of this size, the district simply transferred employees from existing schools. As a result, buildings across the district have been left understaffed.
From my understanding, the CTE building the second-largest building in the district—is operating with only four security guards responsible for the safety and security of the entire facility. Clerical employees, custodians, and security personnel have all been reassigned from other schools, leaving those buildings with staffing shortages and, in many cases, no replacements.
I respectfully ask:
Were you aware that opening the CTE building would create staffing shortages throughout the district?
If you were not aware, why weren’t you informed?
If you were aware, how can this situation be considered acceptable?
The staffing concerns extend beyond one building. Are you aware that:
Clerical departments are understaffed?
Part-time Food Service employees have had their hours reduced?
Custodial staff have been transferred without replacements, leaving schools short-handed?
CSEA employees are continually being asked to do more with less?
The issue is simple. If you add another building with thousands of square feet to maintain but you do not reduce responsibilities elsewhere—you need more employees, not fewer.
The district has added another major facility, yet it has not added the staffing necessary to safely operate and maintain it. Decisions of this magnitude should be based on the safety of our students, the cleanliness of our schools, and the well-being of our employees not solely on budget considerations.
Our members will continue to do everything they can to serve this district with professionalism and dedication. That has never been the issue. However, there comes a point where doing more with less is no longer sustainable.
With the addition of the CTE building, who is now responsible for plowing the additional snow? Who is maintaining the additional grounds? Who is cleaning and securing the additional square footage? The workload has increased, but the staffing has not.
For years, Board members have asked, “What can we do for CSEA?” My answer is simple: Do the right thing. Invest in the people who keep this district running every single day.
Our members are proud of the work they do, but they need the staffing and resources necessary to do their jobs safely and effectively. We are asking the Board to acknowledge these concerns, address the staffing shortages, and make the investments necessary to support both our employees and the students they serve.
Respectfully
Your CSEA Unit #7910 Leadership
