Newbury Food Pantry Providing food assistance to our neighbors in need Care is taken to protect the many volunteers who make the Food Pantry successful, as well as its clients.

With the current pandemic, hundreds of families, elders and individuals receive food each week through direct delivery and drive through pick up in accordance with strict CDC and Commonwealth of Massachusetts pandemic health guidelines. During this time, our chapel has not been available for services, and with the continual increase in need, the Food Pantry is using all of the chapel, with food products separated for delivery package assembly in the chapel pews, foyer and around the altar. Clients order food online during the day Wednesday and through Noon on Thursday. Distribution is on Fridays (except on major holidays). Place your order here: https://www.newburyfoodpantry.org/get-food

Delivery is available for those who do not have transportation or who are immune compromised. Deliveries are made between 10 am and 1pm on Fridays. For pickup orders, a volunteer will call you after you place your order in order to tell you what time you should arrive at the church to pick up your order. Pickups take place between 2:45 and 5 pm. When you arrive, display your name on a piece of paper and wait in the car while we retrieve and load your groceries into your trunk. If you don’t have internet to place an order or if you have other questions, please call us at (978) 358-1077. Due to the volume of need at this time, we currently only have capacity to serve the residents of Byfield, Newbury, Newburyport, Georgetown, Ipswich, West Newbury, Rowley and Salisbury and Plum Island.

“Neighbors Feeding Neighbors: The All-Volunteer First Parish Newbury Food Pantry Feeds More Than 750 People a Week and Continues to Grow.”

Did you know the food pantry was showcased in March’s issue of Northshore magazine? The article chronicles how it all started many years ago when cofounders Jane Merrow and Sue Bocuzzo realized there was a great need for food assistance in the community.

🥜💜 410 pounds of kindness!

A huge thank-you to Olde Newbury Golf Club and Bangor Savings Bank for organizing a peanut butter and jelly drive to support our food pantry! Together, they collected an incredible 410 pounds of peanut butter and jelly to help nourish our neighbors in need.

We’re so grateful for their generosity and for community partners who continue to show up in meaningful ways.

Thank you for helping us make a difference, one jar at a time!

Longtime Volunteer Receives Community Award

Following a 29-year career as a federal employee, Sue Coppinger has dedicated her retirement to serving the community. Since joining the Newburyport Lions Club in 2019, she has chaired community food drives, coordinated Salvation Army Thursday dinners, advised the Newburyport High School Leo Club, co-chaired the Lions Health Fair, and volunteered at the Yankee Homecoming Bed Races.

Since 2020, she has also volunteered at the First Parish Newbury Food Pantry and serves as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Ann’s Parish in West Newbury. Her unwavering commitment to service continues to make a meaningful difference throughout the Greater Newburyport community.

Sue lives in Newburyport with her husband, Mike. They have three great-grandchildren she adores.

If you’ve ever visited the food pantry in the summer, you have probably seen the community gardens. Plots are rented by members of the community to grow vegetables for their families. What’s really great is that whatever they can’t use, they donate to the pantry. In addition, many gardeners grow beautiful flowers. Once the flowers are ready, a small but dedicated group of volunteers spend time on Thursday afternoons to create beautiful bouquets for our guests. They pick a mix of flowers, like bright dahlias, cheerful zinnias, sunny marigolds, and even some basil sprigs for a bit of greenery. Imagine getting a lovely bouquet with your grocery delivery.

Many of our guests comment on how special it feels to receive that little surprise. It’s a small gesture that brightens the day of someone facing challenging times and shows the spirit of community support.

On June 26 & 27, Veasey Memorial Park hosted a creative and inspiring fundraiser that turned everyday “trash” into incredible works of art at their Rubbish to Runway event.

We were thrilled to see our own Newbury Food Pantry materials take center stage! Early Friday setup volunteer Nancy Montello collected trash and recycling materials from the pantry over the past year, which her daughter transformed into four unique runway outfits. Nancy’s grandchildren also joined the fun as models, showcasing the creativity and importance of rethinking what we throw away.

The pantry was proudly recognized during the runway presentation and featured on a display highlighting the materials used in these one-of-a-kind designs.

A huge thank you to Nancy, her family, and everyone who helped bring this amazing vision to life while reminding us that small actions can make a big impact. 💚♻️

Please note that we will be closed Friday July 3rd. When placing your order next week for Friday June 26th, please plan accordingly.

As we are an all-volunteer food pantry, we are closing to give our volunteers a much-needed break so that they can take full advantage of activities celebrating our country’s 250th anniversary.

Also, we would like to remind you of two benefits
available to you when you pick up your order.
🌟You may select a variety of items from our “one of a kind” shelving, which are not available to order online.
🌟In addition to the produce that you order online, you can also select additional fruits and vegetables that are only available to guests who are picking up their order.

We hope you enjoy the holiday weekend!
