End of an Era at Lisbon Fire Department
Today, September 16, 2026, marks the end of an era for the Lisbon Fire Department as we decommission the station siren at our old firehouse.
Our fire siren has been a familiar sound in the Lisbon community since the 1950s. Long before two-way radios, radio pagers, cell phones, and modern notification systems, that siren was how our firefighters were alerted to an emergency.
When a fire was reported, the station siren would sound, calling our members to the firehouse. Once there, they would learn where the fire was and what type of emergency they were responding to. The information would then be written on a chalkboard so that members arriving later would know the location and could respond directly to the scene.
For generations of Lisbon firefighters, that siren wasn't simply a piece of equipment—it was a call to action. Its sound meant that somewhere in our community, someone needed help.
Today, technology has transformed the way we are notified. Cell phones, text messages, and third-party emergency notification applications can alert our members within minutes, providing information about what the emergency is, where it is located, and who is responding.
While these advancements allow us to respond faster and with more information, saying goodbye to the siren is still a significant moment.
For more than 70 years, its sound has been woven into the history of the Lisbon Fire Department and our community. It has called countless firefighters from their homes, jobs, dinners, and beds to answer the call.
Today, we silence it for the last time—not because its service was no longer important, but because it faithfully served its purpose for generations.
Thank you to all of the firefighters, past and present, who answered that siren whenever it sounded.
