This past Sunday, members of the Green Pond Volunteer Fire Department and their families participated in the 25th Tunnels to Towers NYC 5K Run/Walk.

The race starts at the tunnel entrance in Brooklyn and finishes in Manhattan, retracing Stephen Siller's 3.5-mile route through the Hugh L. Carey (Brooklyn-Battery) Tunnel.

On September 11, 2001, Stephen, who was assigned to Brooklyn’s Squad 1, had just finished his shift and was on his way to play golf with his brothers when he got word over his scanner of a plane hitting the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Upon hearing the news, he returned to Squad 1 to get his gear.

Stephen drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it had already been closed for security purposes. Determined to carry out his duty, he strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back, and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave up his life while saving others.

Amongst the different ways that this charity helps others in need, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation provides mortgage-free homes to catastrophically injured veterans, first responders, and Gold Star families.

This past Saturday, two of our members (Matt Kanya and Ryan Hill) participated in the 2nd Annual NJ 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and 25 Years of Remembrance at MetLife Stadium. Every step climbed and every donation supports the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF).

https://www.firehero.org

The climb, supported by Fire and safety Services, honors the 343 who died on 9/11 as well as the thousands who have died from related illnesses stemming from Ground Zero.

Each individual climber had the name of a FF who died on 9/11 worn on their shirt.
The climb consisted of walking up 2200 stairs (simulating 110 stories).

That is not an easy feat. Well done boys!

It is with deep sadness that the Green Pond Volunteer Fire Department mourns the passing of longtime member and friend, Jim Skutka.

Jim dedicated more than 50 years of his life to the fire service, serving with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, Rockaway Township Fire Department Company No. 1 – Hibernia, and the Green Pond Volunteer Fire Department.

Jim joined the GPVFD in the early 1970s and remained a dedicated member of our department for more than five decades. During that time, he served on the Association Board and held virtually every leadership position within the department, including Engineer, Lieutenant, Captain, and Chief.

A lifelong resident of Green Pond who grew up in Rockaway Township, Jim’s commitment to protecting his neighbors and serving his community was truly a way of life. Generations of Green Pond firefighters had the privilege of serving alongside him, learning from him, and benefiting from the experience and knowledge he accumulated over a lifetime in the fire service.

More than the titles he held or the years he served, Jim will be remembered as part of the fabric and history of the Green Pond Volunteer Fire Department and the community he called home.

We extend our deepest condolences to Jim’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters.

Thank you, Jim, for more than 50 years of service, dedication, and friendship.

Rest easy, Chief. We’ll take it from here.
