Newport has been doing Halloween together for a long time. On October 31, the Hootenanny returns to the Little League Field at Newport Community Park.

Hosted by Newport NC Rotary, this free community tradition gives kids a whole evening to spend in costume, playing games and collecting candy.

Over the years, that has meant carnival games, costume contests, hayrides, bounce houses and a haunted house, along with free food and treats. Click the link in the comments to visit the event website for more details and everything you need to plan your visit.

Local volunteers, businesses, civic groups and the Town help Rotary keep the Hootenanny free for families. Whether this is a family tradition or your first time experiencing it, we hope to see you there.

REMINDER: On Tuesday, November 17, 2026, around 2:20 p.m. ET, FEMA and the Federal Communications Commission will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS).

The test will air on radio and TV only and will not be sent to mobile phones. No action is needed from the public.

Federal law requires FEMA to conduct a nationwide EAS test at least once every three years. Routine tests help ensure the alert system is ready to provide timely information when it matters most.

Following the test, FEMA and our partners will review the results and identify opportunities to strengthen future alerting capabilities.

1) please inspect your space heater for cracked or damaged cords.
2) always plug space heaters directly into wall outlets and never use an extension cord or power strip.

4) use a space heater that has an anti-tip protection feature, such as a mechanical or electronic switch that automatically cuts power if the unit is knocked over or tilted past a safe angle.

⚠️ **Carbon Monoxide: The Invisible Killer!**
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas that can be deadly. It can result from fuel-burning appliances or generators that are improperly maintained or vented.

🚨 **Protect your family!** Install and maintain CO alarms in your home. Just like smoke alarms, CO alarms provide early warning and can save lives!
