Naval War College (NWC) is the oldest institution of its kind in the world. The college delivers excellence in education, research, and outreach, informing today’s decision makers, educating tomorrow’s leaders, and engaging partners and allies on all matters of naval power in order to preserve the peace, respond in crisis and win decisively in war. In today’s dynamic security environment, even if numerical and technological superiority could be achieved, it would not be enough to ensure victory over an array of potential adversaries. Graduates must possess the mental strength and flexibility to out-think competitors in all domains. NWC deepens the intellectual engagement of naval, joint, interagency, and international leaders and warriors to achieve that cognitive advantage. Naval War College, through its network of subject matter experts, is available to provide opinion and analysis on a number of defense, strategy and national security topics. The college is here to help connect you to the right source for your story or help you find a speaker for your educational, business or civic event. The views presented by the faculty do not reflect official positions of the Naval War College, DON or DOD. COMMUNITY GUIDELINES:

The latest from the Naval War College, China Maritime Studies Institute's, CMSI Translations #38: Furious Seas, Raging Waves: The PLA’s Development of Sea-to-Shore Strike Capabilities

At present, driven by anxiety and panic over China’s rising power and a desire to contain its peaceful development, U.S. political circles frequently provoke China on core interests related to Taiwan. They have even schemed to exploit “Taiwan Independence” elements to cross a red line regarding forced reunification. Such plots aim to “Ukrainize” Taiwan and drive the island to ruin, thereby raising the cost of reunification for China in order to weaken the country’s national strength and curb its development. Meanwhile, in recent months, “Taiwan Independence” forces on the island, emboldened by the backing of external powers, have acted with increasing brazenness. In response to the repeated actions by U.S. and Taiwan authorities that challenge the bottom line of peace, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army must intensify preparations for military conflict so that, when necessary, it can force a crossing of the Taiwan Strait, launch large-scale amphibious landing operations, completely eliminate the “Taiwan Independence” forces, and achieve the complete reunification of the country.

Just released!
From the Naval War College, China Maritime Studies Institute's, China Maritime Report Number 60;
PLA Naval Aviation Personnel, Training and Career Paths for a Modern Force

PLA Naval Aviation has undergone substantial institutional transformation over the past two decades. This transformation is driven by the goal of becoming a carrier-based force capable of effective joint operations in the maritime domain.
This transformation has been accompanied by reforms to pilot education, training, and career management systems, aimed at producing a qualified force capable of conducting long-range maritime operations.
Despite significant progress, there are still areas that require improvements, particularly the Naval Aviation University.
The PLAN likely aims to further professionalize pilot education and shorten the carrier pilot training pipeline by equipping Naval Aviation University training units with carrier-capable training aircraft to reduce reliance on operational units.
PLAN authors have praised the U.S. Navy’s tactical training, suggesting the PLAN may seek to incorporate more combat-realistic training content.
It is likely that the PLA Naval Aviation’s transition training phase will continue to improve, building on the initial progress in adoption of complex force-on-force training scenarios.
Understanding the career progression of officers in this community adds context to the desirability of this career field.
Close attention to how PLA Naval Aviation grows and changes with the adoption of carrier-based KJ-600s and future land-based systems will be important to understanding how the PLAN will fight.
Overall, improvements to Naval Aviation pilot training and joint training by the operational force clearly suggest that the PLAN is increasingly providing its aviation branch with the opportunities to develop technical acumen and tactical competencies required to conduct the missions the PLAN has been tasked with.

Please take a look at the video presentation from the U.S. Naval War College, National Security Lecture Series, 3rd lecture of academic year 2026-2027, titled: Space and National Security

Space has become a vital domain for American national security. This lecture will survey the role of space from Sputnik to our current era of great power competition. The presentation will describe potential challenges to U.S. space security, including how space has factored in the Ukraine and Iran conflicts, how the U.S. has been responding to those threats, and other space issues such as the U.S.-China race for the Moon.

President’s Spotlight: Senior Chief Jeremy Andersen

You can tell a lot about someone based on the legacy they leave behind, and I will be among the many people who will be talking about Senior Chief Culinary Specialist Jeremy Andersen long after he retires from the Navy this December.

If you’ve been to a reception or a dinner at Quarters AA – the Naval War College President’s House – you’re familiar with Senior Andersen’s obvious excellence. He plans, procures and, with some help, perfectly prepares the mouthwatering food for those events.

Those receptions aren’t catered by some outside, critically acclaimed restaurant, even though they look and taste like it. They’re prepared by Senior Andersen, Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Marcia Robinson and our talented CS team.

The accolades he’s accumulated throughout his distinguished career are numerous. As a 2nd Class Petty Officer about 10 years ago here at the war college, he was named the American Culinary Federation’s Armed Forces Master Chef of the Year.

U.S. Naval War College Commemorates 80th Anniversary of USS Missouri Battleship Visit to Istanbul

A delegation from the U.S. Naval War College visited Istanbul, Turkiye, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the landmark 1946 visit by the battleship USS Missouri - a visit that was held to repatriate the body of the late Turkish ambassador, and would go on to be seen as the launch of a new era of U.S.-Turkiye bilateral relations.

On April 5, 1946, the Iowa-class battleship USS Missouri (BB 63), along with escorts Cleveland-class light cruiser USS Providence (CL 82) and Gearing-class destroyer USS Power (DD 839), was joined by the Turkish flagship battlecruiser TCG Yavuz as it made its way to Istanbul carrying the body of the late Turkish Ambassador to the U.S. Mehmet Münir Ertegün, who had died while serving his country in Washington, D.C.
