Heavy rain and storms are expected in Newton and Jasper County over the next several days. A Flood Watch is in effect through Tuesday morning, and repeated rounds of heavy rain could lead to flash flooding, especially overnight tonight. Rainfall totals of more than 2 inches are likely through the week, with some areas seeing over 5 inches, so river flooding is also a growing concern.

There is also a risk of severe weather this afternoon into this evening, with the potential for large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes. Residents should stay weather aware through the evening and monitor for updates.

More rounds of storms and heavy rain are possible Tuesday through the rest of the week, keeping flooding a continued concern. Residents should avoid driving through flooded roads and stay alert for updates from the National Weather Service.

Last week, Firefighter Clark led a workplace fire safety training for seven employees from a local business. The training covered basic fire prevention and safety, along with the proper use of an ABC fire extinguisher.

After the presentation, employees put their skills to the test with hands-on practice using fire extinguishers in a controlled setting. This gave them real experience and more confidence in recognizing and responding to a small fire in the workplace.

Trainings like this let the Newton Fire Department work directly with local businesses to promote fire prevention, preparedness, and community safety.

The Newton Fire Department invites residents to a remembrance ceremony marking 25 years since the September 11, 2001, attacks. The ceremony will be held Friday, September 11, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. in front of the fire department.

During the ceremony, the community will pause to remember the nearly 3,000 people who died on September 11, 2001, including the 343 firefighters and many other first responders who lost their lives that day. The event will also honor everyone whose life changed because of the attacks.

For firefighters, September 11 remains a defining moment in the history of the fire service, a reminder of the values that guide their work every day: duty, courage, sacrifice, and commitment to community. The Newton Fire Department will use this ceremony to reaffirm its commitment to serving Newton residents with that same dedication.

Everyone in the community is welcome to attend and take part in remembering, honoring, and reflecting on the legacy of those who served.

Newton and Jasper County could see thunderstorms today, mainly this morning, with a low risk of a few storms turning severe. The main concern is damaging wind gusts, though isolated hail or heavy rain is also possible. Some storms may redevelop this afternoon and continue into tonight, but the severe weather threat is expected to stay low. Because the ground is already saturated from last week's rain, heavy downpours could lead to localized flash flooding. Residents should stay weather aware today and use caution during any storms.
