Newton Fire and Rescue Receives $139,317.85 FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant
Fire Chief John Alcaidinho is pleased to announce that Newton Fire and Rescue has been awarded a $139,817.85 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The funding of the grant will be used to replace the department's aging portable radios, many of which are more than 25 years old. These radios have exceeded their expected service life and have become increasingly unreliable due to age, frequent malfunctions, and the inability to obtain replacement parts or repairs.
"Reliable communications are one of the most important tools our firefighters and EMS personnel have when responding to emergencies," said Chief John Alcaidinho. "This grant will allow us to replace outdated equipment with modern, dependable radios that will enhance firefighter safety and improve our ability to communicate effectively during emergency incidents."
Portable radios are a critical component of emergency operations, allowing personnel to maintain communication with incident commanders, dispatchers, and other responding agencies. The replacement of these aging radios will improve operational effectiveness and help ensure that firefighters and EMS providers have the communications capabilities necessary to safely serve the community.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program was established to help fire departments and non-affiliated EMS organizations obtain critically needed equipment, training, and resources necessary to protect the public and emergency responders from fire and related hazards.
Chief John Alcaidinho. expressed appreciation to FEMA for recognizing the department's need and provinces funding for this important project.
"On behalf of Newton Fire and Rescue, I would like to thank FEMA and the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program for their continued support of the fire service," Chief John Alcaidinho. said. "This award represents a significant investment in the safety of our personnel and the residents and visitors we are proud to serve."
