We are still accepting donations for the Holiday Helpers initiative, where we have a goal of feeding 250 families for the holidays. Can you help us?

First responders from Harvey County plus surrounding counties pack food boxes each year for families in need to help make the holiday times a little less stressful.

Every donation, big or small, helps us purchase food for local families through Dillons, which generously provides a 10% match on every donation.

-Donations can be dropped off at the Newton Police Department or Harvey County Sheriff’s Office, both located at 120 E. Seventh St.
-Checks can be made payable to First Responder Holiday Helpers.

Together, we can make the holiday season brighter for local families!

The trench rescue training on West First Street has concluded.

Take a little peek behind the scenes of this morning’s simulated trench rescue exercise.

We’re still gathering photos and videos from the training and look forward to sharing a more comprehensive recap next week, including more about the exercise and the teamwork involved.

A big thank-you to the McPherson Fire Department Heavy Rescue Team, Eagle Med Air Ambulance, Accel Construction, and Graber Backhoe for joining Newton Fire/EMS for this important training.

Stay tuned for next week’s in-depth recap!

THIS MORNING- Training Day Heads-Up: Trench Rescue Edition

Today, October 22, at 8 a.m., Newton Fire/EMS will conduct a simulated trench rescue exercise near the Harvest Pointe construction site. To note, not all of the space marked in the yellow box will be utilized , and is just a general idea of where the exercise will be conducted.

Newton Fire/EMS will be joined by the McPherson Heavy Rescue Team and EagleMed Air Ambulance to practice coordination and response during a trench rescue.

No emergency here - just firefighters doing their homework! If you see emergency vehicles at the site, rest assured it’s all part of the planned training exercise.

Thanks to Cooper Early Education Center-we love connecting with students of all ages to talk about fire safety and make it less scary!

Around 11 p.m. last evening, Newton Fire/EMS responded to a home in the 300 block of East 3rd Street after lightning struck a house, causing a small fire and damage to other parts of the home.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

A reminder that even when a storm passes quickly, lightning can cause damage to homes and property. Stay weather-aware, Newton.

The inside lanes of northbound and southbound I-135 remain closed near mile marker 33 after a semi rollover crash this morning.

The crash involved a semi transporting cattle on southbound I-135 near mile marker 33, between U.S. Highway 50 and K-15.

After the initial incident, a member of an animal rescue group was injured after falling from the trailer and is reported to be in serious condition.

All cattle have now been removed from the trailer-some being alive and some whom have perished.

Additional closures may be necessary as crews work to remove the overturned semi.

Please slow down, use caution and give first responders and recovery crews plenty of room to work safely.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is coming up Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This is a great opportunity to safely dispose of prescription medications you no longer need or use. If you’re a caregiver, take a few minutes to help a loved one go through their medications and identify anything that should be disposed of.

Bring unwanted medications to the Harvey County Law Enforcement Center, 120 E. 7th St., on Saturday, October 24, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Proper disposal helps keep medications out of the wrong hands and out of our community’s water supply.
