Another successful Truck Company Weekend in the books!

Firefighters from across North Jersey and Pennsylvania put in the work this weekend, sharpening their truck company skills. From mastering basic techniques to working together as a team, this class focused on building confidence, improving efficiency, communicating, and preparing firefighters for the challenges they may face on the fireground.

Firefighters covered a wide range of truck company topics such as vertical and horizontal ventilation, large area searching, forcible entry, can confidence, ground and aerial ladders, metal cutting, and much more!

Huge shoutout to our friend Fred Reader Jr. and the rest of the team at Firefighter One for always supporting us and investing in our communities Firefighters.

Great work by all participants and we hope to see you back soon!

Final Size-Up & Incident Command

Recruit Class #709 welcomed our Sussex County Fire Marshal and Sussex County Coordinators (Mac’s) as guest instructors tonight to assist with their final size-up class!

The evening began with an overview of their respective roles and responsibilities on the fireground, including how they support incident command, assist with resource requests, and contribute to effective incident management.

Through a series of realistic scenarios, recruits assigned to Incident Command (IC) and Operations had the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice. Our guest instructors provided valuable feedback, highlighting what went well, identifying areas for improvement, and helping students develop their decision-making, communication, and leadership skills.

Effective size-up, strong command presence, and clear communication are critical to a successful incident. Nights like these help bridge the gap between the classroom and the fireground, preparing our recruits to think critically, adapt under pressure, and make sound decisions when it matters most.

A huge thank-you to our County Fire Marshal and Mac’s for sharing their time, experience, and knowledge with Recruit Class #709! 👨‍🚒🔥

Sussex County Community College is strengthening its Fire Science and Criminal Justice programs with a $10,000 grant from the Carolyn Jane Scott Charitable Trust. The funding will support a Fire Behavior & Thermal Imaging Training Enhancement Project.

This investment will provide additional training opportunities at the Sussex County Public Safety Academy, which will include a furnished-room burn cell and modern investigative equipment.

The new facility will give students and public safety professionals valuable hands-on experience through controlled live-fire demonstrations and realistic post-fire investigative scenarios.

Sussex County Community College, in partnership with PBA Local 138, held a 25th Anniversary 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at the College’s 9/11 Memorial on Connor Green.

Members of the College and community gathered to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11th and honor the courage and sacrifice of the first responders.

The ceremony included the Sussex County Sheriff’s Honor Guard, the Police Pipes & Drums of Morris County, the Newton High School Choir, representatives from local police, fire, EMS, and veterans’ organizations, and Bugles Across America.

Keynote speaker Colonel Dave Melendez Jr., a member of the FDNY and Army National Guard, reflected on the unity and compassion Americans demonstrated following the attacks.

“September 11 was a tragedy that happened to America, but September 12 is about what Americans chose to do next,” Melendez said. “America is strongest when we see beyond ourselves.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this meaningful day of remembrance, reflection, and hope. We will never forget.

Firefighter II is underway for Recruit Class #709!

Last night, recruits took the first step into the next phase of their training with student-led presentations on topics of their choice. The exercise challenged them to speak confidently, communicate a clear message, and step outside their comfort zones.

Great firefighters need more than technical skills—they need confidence, communication, leadership, and the ability to connect with others.

Another night of learning. Another step toward the fireground. 🔥👨‍🚒

This week, Recruit Class #709 successfully completed Ladders 3 & 4! 🪜🔥

Recruits were put to the test while completing various ladder skill stations, including the 35’ ground ladder, utilizing a roof ladder on a pitched roof, and operating on and off of an aerial ladder.

Students built confidence throughout the day by getting hands-on repetitions, working as a team, and pushing themselves outside of their comfort zones. These skills are critical to safe and effective fireground operations, and Class #709 continues to put in the hard work to build the foundation needed to become successful firefighters.

Lastly, the Recruits were put to the test by conducting a short skills evolution. They were tasked with racing through a dressing drill, forcing entry through the blue door, and throwing a ground ladder successfully to the window. All Recruits were successful and completed the mission. In the end, only one came out on top and won the big prize! Congratulations and well done Recruit Gunderman from Franklin Fire Department Inc.

Huge shoutout to Fred Reader Jr. from Firefighter One for graciously and continuously supporting us and our mission. We’re confident that the Fire-Dex Captain Jim hood will get put to good use!

Keep working, keep learning, and keep getting better! 💪🚒
