Here’s a little school bus refresher:
🟡 Yellow means slow.
🛑 Red means stop.
Let’s protect kids getting on and off the school bus! Always stop when the stop-arm is out.

Newtown's School Bus Stop Safety Program's warning period has ended. Please drive safely and stop for the RED lights.

Newtown Police Lieutenant Graduates from the FBI National Academy!

“I am extremely proud to congratulate Lieutenant Scott Smith on his graduation from the 299th Session of the FBI National Academy.

Completing this highly selective program places him among an elite group of law enforcement professionals; fewer than one percent of officers nationwide ever have the opportunity to attend.

Lt. Smith has dedicated nearly two decades of service to the Newtown Police Department since joining us in 2007. His promotion to Lieutenant in 2022 and his leadership of the Patrol Division and now the Professional Standards Division reflect the high standards, integrity, and commitment to excellence that the National Academy demands.

The advanced leadership, communication, and professional training he received will further strengthen our agency and benefit the entire Newtown community.

On behalf of the men and women of the Newtown Police Department, I commend Lt. Smith for this outstanding achievement.”

Chief David Kullgren

Newtown Traffic Officer Lenny Penna recently sat down with the Director of Public Affairs John Voket on the For the People Podcast to discuss the rising safety concerns regarding electric bicycles. During the podcast Traffic Officer Penna identifies the three classes of E-Bikes, the current Connecticut laws and his observations of what is occurring on local roadways.
With the Holiday season fast approaching we encourage Newtown residents to listen to this Podcast and educate themselves on E-bike safety practices and Connecticut laws.

TOWN OF NEWTOWN

September 26, 2026 5:30 PM – Nor’easter Update:

This is a long duration storm, with forecasts calling for worsening conditions regarding rain, high winds, and accumulating effects of roadways and utilities.

It is critically important to REMAIN VIGILANT and STAY SAFE.

Our First Responders, First Selectman, town agencies and Eversource are in communication, tracking and responding to events, and will continue throughout the storm.

There are no through roads that are completely closed - there are some cul-de-sacs and roads with access on two sides that are closed. There are several that have one lane or shoulders impacted by trees and/or wires and can be hazardous, especially as daylight wanes. With increasing wind and rain, road passage can change in a moment.

Residents are urged to minimize travel and stay off the roads for their own safety as well as for others.

Residents should stay away from wires and assume they are all live.

If residents have lost electrical power, they should notify Eversource at 1-800-286-2000. If they have a generator for emergency power, please remember to operate the generator outdoors and away from the house.

If anyone is experiencing an emergency, they should call 911.
