A big THANK YOU to our Pennsylvania State elected officials! These bills are one step closer to being reality for the thousands of professional telecommunicators in Pennsylvania who are the first, first responders to any incident. They are the 911 call takers and radio dispatchers that get us to the right place with the right equipment and who provide important pre-arrival instructions when you call. Recognizing them as first responders opens up more doors for the support they need

🚨 BREAKING LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: PENNSYLVANIA 911 TELECOMMUNICATORS ONE STEP CLOSER TO FIRST RESPONDER RECOGNITION! 🚨

The Pennsylvania Chapter of APCO is pleased to share significant progress in the effort to formally recognize Pennsylvania’s 911 Telecommunicators as emergency responders!

Today, October 19, 2026, House Bill 453 (HB 453) reached TWO important legislative milestones!

✅ Senate Appropriations Committee: HB 453 advanced following a unanimous 22–0 vote!

✅ Pennsylvania Senate Floor: The Senate subsequently considered HB 453, unanimously approving an amendment by a 50–0 vote before agreeing to the bill as amended!

These actions follow the bill’s previous unanimous passage in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives by a vote of 203–0.

📞 THE FIRST FIRST RESPONDERS

Every emergency response begins somewhere, and more often than not, it begins with the voice answering a 911 call.

Public safety Telecommunicators provide lifesaving CPR instructions, coordinate emergency resources, assist callers during critical incidents, and serve as the vital connection between those experiencing an emergency and the responders arriving to help.

While their work takes place behind a headset rather than at the scene, their responsibilities are no less essential to protecting lives and communities.

PA APCO has long recognized the critical role these dedicated professionals play in public safety. Formal recognition as emergency responders acknowledges the professionalism, training, responsibilities, and commitment demonstrated by Pennsylvania’s 911 Telecommunicators every day.

PA APCO extends its appreciation to members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly for their continued consideration and support of this important legislation.

Today’s actions represent meaningful progress toward ensuring public safety telecommunicators receive the recognition their responsibilities warrant.

While additional legislative steps remain before HB 453 can become law, PA APCO will continue monitoring its progress and supporting the recognition of Pennsylvania’s public safety Telecommunicators.

We did a (new) thing this past Saturday. A very special birthday girl got to celebrate her birthday and we fulfilled one of her wishes: a tour of the ambulance and a mini-party! Happy 5th Birthday Molly!

In between how busy we were this week with EMS calls, Lt. Ashley Lopez came in on her day off to assist the Battalion Chief with compliance checks of our equipment for our State licensure inspection. While she and Battalion Chief Moran were in one of the rigs they saw movement in the corner and found, a snake! Let’s add this to the list of things we’ve never seen before in EMS. Our ambulances are parked inside with the bay doors and truck doors closed. So it’s a mystery how this guy got inside. Our fearless Lieutenant collected the snake and set it free outside.

Newtown Emergency Medical Services was dispatched on October 8th to assist on a fire scene with Newtown Fire Rescue and numerous other companies from the central and lower Bucks County area. Medic 145, Medic 145-1 and Medic 172 along with the Chief and Battalion Chief managed EMS operations. On fire calls, our role is to provide medical surveillance and treatment of the firefighters and civilians involved. We processed more than 20 firefighters through the rehab sector and treated one injury.

Last night while you may have been asleep, your Paramedics, Firefighters, and police officers handled a crash with entrapment. The teamwork and professionalism of all personnel who responded made a difficult rescue run smooth and successful.

Happy October! In September, our Emergency Communications Center received a total of 63,560 calls ☎. Of those calls, 18,026 were 911 calls 🆘. We also handled 43 text-to-911 calls 💬. We processed 46,699 Police incidents 👮, 2,138 Fire incidents 🚒, and 5,829 EMS incidents 🚑

Wow, what a beautiful busy fall day! We have personnel at the Upper Makefield Community Day in Brownsburg Park, and this morning an extra crew at the Community College for the Autism Cares 5k. We also have a car wash event at our Newtown station on South Eagle Road to benefit Council Rock North’s choir group. So much to get out and do today!

What else can we say….but thank you! This week the community was out in force in support of us. We are grateful for the residents, P.J. Whelihan’s, and the Upper Makefield Business Association for their support and fundraising this week. UMBA is among the top civic groups who really care about this community and work daily to make our world a better place.

🚑 THIS IS WHAT COMMUNITY LOOKS LIKE! ❤️
Wednesday evening was a wonderful example of local businesses, community organizations, first responders, and residents coming together for a common purpose.

At our September UMBA General Meeting at P.J. Whelihan’s in Newtown, the UMBA - Upper Makefield Business Association proudly presented a $2,500 donation to Newtown Ambulance Squad in support of the vital work they do for our community every single day.

But what made the evening especially meaningful was that this was much more than an UMBA meeting — it was a TRUE COMMUNITY EVENT!

Newtown EMS partnered with P.J. Whelihan’s for a special community fundraiser. Throughout the evening, anyone who came to the restaurant for dinner, drinks, or takeout could support Newtown EMS simply by participating — with 15% of their bill donated back to Newtown EMS.

And our community showed up! 👏

The restaurant was filled with neighbors, friends, businesses, EMS supporters, and community members all helping support the men and women who are there for us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

UMBA was proud to hold our meeting that evening and be part of such a tremendous show of community support.

A huge THANK YOU to P.J. Whelihan’s, Newtown EMS, our UMBA members, and everyone from the Upper Makefield Township community who attended, ordered dinner, stopped by, donated, or simply helped spread the word.
