🩸 Real talk from your EMS crew this Halloween: we LOVE a good gory costume… but please don't make us do a double take πŸ‘€

Gory makeup can look real enough to make someone call 911, so here's how to keep it spooky without sending us running πŸš‘πŸ’¨

πŸ§ͺ Patch test fake blood and makeup on your skin 24 hours before. Allergic reactions are scarier than any costume
πŸ‘οΈ Keep fake blood out of your eyes, and only use edible blood near your mouth
🧼 Some fake blood stains skin, clothes, car seats, and your mom's couch. Test it first 😬
🍬 Little ones love edible fake blood. Make sure kids aren't eating the non-edible kind
πŸ†˜ If you ARE actually hurt, tell people clearly. Real injuries can hide under fake ones

Our crews are on duty all Halloween night, and we'd much rather admire your costume from the sidewalk than see you in the back of our ambulance πŸŽƒ Stay spooky, stay safe πŸ’™

🀧 Cold, flu, or COVID? Here's how to tell the difference! 🌑️

🀧 Cold
Comes on slowly. Runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat. Usually mild.

πŸ€’ Flu
Hits fast and hard. Fever, chills, body aches, headache, and exhaustion.

😷 COVID
Can look like either one! Fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, and sometimes loss of taste or smell. A test is the only way to know for sure.

βœ… Rest, drink plenty of fluids, and stay home when you're sick to protect others.

🚨 Call 911 right away for trouble breathing, chest pain or pressure, confusion, bluish lips or face, or if someone can't stay awake.

πŸ‚ Leaf burning season is here! Before you light that pile, keep it safe:

βœ… Check your township or local fire department's burn rules first
βœ… Skip burning on windy or very dry days
βœ… Keep piles small and away from buildings, fences & trees
βœ… Have a hose or water bucket ready
βœ… Never use gas to get it started
βœ… Stay with it until it's completely out

πŸ”₯ If a fire spreads or gets out of control, step back and call 911 right away.

Enjoy the fall cleanup, and stay safe out there πŸ’™

🌲 Tell someone where you're hunting and when you'll be back
πŸ“± Carry a fully charged phone and know how to share your location
πŸͺ’ Wear a full-body safety harness in your tree stand, every time.
🧑 Wear blaze orange so others can see you
🩹 Pack a basic first aid kit
🚨 If something happens, call 911 right away and give your location as clearly as you can

πŸ”₯ It's Fire Prevention Week! πŸ”₯

A few minutes now can save lives later. Here's your quick safety check:

πŸ”” Test your smoke alarms. Press the button and make sure they sound.
πŸ”‹ Swap out old batteries. Replace any alarm that's 10 years or older.
πŸšͺ Plan two ways out of every room, and pick a meeting spot outside.
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ Practice your escape plan with everyone in the house, kids included.
🍳 Never leave cooking unattended. It's the leading cause of home fires.

If there's a fire, get out, stay out, and call 911.

Stay safe, neighbors πŸ’™

We see you πŸ‘€ Slowing down, craning your neck, wondering what's happening behind the lights πŸš‘

That curiosity? It might be a sign πŸ’™ Some of the best people in EMS started out exactly where you are, just wondering what it's like.

When the heart stops, every second counts. πŸ’™

Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere β€” and most happen at home. 🏠 Immediate CPR can double or even triple someone's chance of survival. β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

You don't need to be a medical professional to help:

πŸ“ž Call 911
πŸ‘ Push hard and fast in the center of the chest
🎡 Aim for 100–120 compressions per minute (think Stayin' Alive)
πŸ” Keep going until help arrives

Our crews are always on the way, but you are the first link in the chain of survival. The minutes before we arrive matter more than you might think. πŸš‘

Learn CPR. It could be your family, your friend, or a stranger who needs you. πŸ’™

βœ… AMBULANCE HISTORY QUIZ: ANSWERS

Thanks to everyone who played! Here's how you did πŸ‘‡

1️⃣ The word AMBULANCE comes from the Latin word ambulare. What does it mean?
A) To heal
B) To walk
C) To hurry

βœ… B) TO WALK. Mobile field hospitals that moved with the army were called walking hospitals, and the name stuck.

2️⃣ Who created the first organized battlefield ambulance system in the 1790s?
A) Florence Nightingale
B) Clara Barton
C) Dominique-Jean Larrey, a French military surgeon

βœ… C) DOMINIQUE-JEAN LARREY. His horse-drawn flying ambulances rushed wounded soldiers off the battlefield for care. He later became Napoleon's chief surgeon.

3️⃣ Until the 1970s, many U.S. communities got ambulance service from which unexpected place?
A) Funeral homes
B) Post offices
C) Taxi companies

βœ… A) FUNERAL HOMES. Hearses could carry a person lying down, so many funeral homes ran ambulance service too. National EMS standards in the 1970s changed all that.
