In Memory of Chief Craig Matherne Sr.
The Norco Area Volunteer Fire Department joins the Matherne family, our members, and the entire Norco community in mourning the passing of Chief Craig Matherne Sr.
Chief Matherne dedicated more than four decades of his life to serving the citizens of Norco, faithfully answering the call from 1975 through 2019. Throughout those 44 years, he exemplified the values of volunteer service, leadership, and commitment to his community. As Fire Chief, he helped guide the department through years of growth and change, always placing the safety of the community and the well-being of his firefighters above himself.
A proud lifelong resident of Norco, Chief Matherne’s roots ran deep within the community he so faithfully served. He was more than a firefighter. He was a neighbor, a mentor, a leader, and a trusted friend. His willingness to answer the alarm at any hour, his calm leadership during emergencies, and his dedication to the fire service left a lasting impression on generations of firefighters who had the privilege of serving alongside him.
In recognition of his extraordinary dedication and countless contributions, Chief Matherne earned the distinguished honor of becoming a Life Member of the Norco Area Volunteer Fire Department. This designation reflects not only his years of service but also the profound impact he had on the department, its members, and the community. His legacy is forever woven into the history of the Norco Fire Department.
The legacy of Chief Matherne cannot be measured simply by the years he served, but by the lives he touched, the firefighters he mentored, and the example he set for those who continue to wear the Norco badge today. His commitment to service helped shape the department into what it is today, and his influence will continue to be felt for many years to come.
On behalf of the officers, members, and Life Members of the Norco Area Volunteer Fire Department, we extend our deepest gratitude for Chief Matherne’s lifetime of selfless service, unwavering dedication, and steadfast leadership. We also thank the Matherne family for sharing him with our department and our community for so many years.
To the Matherne family, please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. To the citizens of Norco, we join you in remembering and honoring a man whose life was defined by service to others.
Rest easy, Chief. Your watch is over. We will take it from here. Your legacy will not be forgotten.
