Last weekend, Sheriff Baron, Undersheriff Col. O'Toole, and members of our Community Affairs Division had a wonderful time celebrating Homecoming with Norfolk State University.

Sheriff Baron had this to say about the annual event that brings so many people together to celebrate the Spartans, β€œEvery year, we look forward to participating in the Norfolk State University Homecoming Parade. Connecting with students and the community is an important part of building trust and strengthening relationships with the people we serve. The energy, school spirit, and outstanding NSU Marching Band make this a truly special event.”

Giving a big shoutout to Senior Deputy S. Johnson who recently stopped to assist a citizen with a flat tire. Senior Deputy Johnson works in our Civil Process Division and is always helping out and volunteering when he can, so hearing that he stopped to help a citizen in need doesn't surprise us at all. We are thankful to the citizen for taking the time to send us a message and recognize Senior Deputy Johnson.

Here's what she had to say:
"I wanted to take a moment and thank Deputy Johnson! I was on my way to a Drs appointment when my tire became flat on 264E. Deputy Johnson saw me and my son struggling to get everything taken care of and he stopped (2 VDOT workers had driven past, possibly on their way to something else) and offered to assist us. I just wanted to say in a time where so many are spreading hate and there isn’t always enough good being shown I really appreciate Deputy Johnson!!!!"

Earlier this week we hosted our 2026 Senior Fest event at Chartway Arena and what a day it was!

Each year this event surprises us in the best possible way and this year was no different.

We had 800 seniors register to attend, more than 80 vendors on-hand to speak with attendees - including health screenings and flu shots, and approximately 20 state and local officials in attendance. Julia Avery from WAVY TV 10 served as the emcee for the event and Dr. Marissa Galicia-Castillo from Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University served as our guest speaker. The City of Norfolk also renewed it's Triad Charter with the Virginia Attorney General's Office and renewed our commitment to working together to keep senior citizens safe.

This event would not be possible each year without the unwavering support of our sponsors. Thank you to Dominion Energy, American Legion Tidewater Post 327, Sentara, Virginia Natural Gas, Towne Bank, Club 60, United Healthcare, Cosmo Club of Norfolk, City of Norfolk Human Services, Keefe, and Clear Captions, LLC. We would also like to give a big thank you to Home Depot, Winn Nursery, Chartway Arena, Oakview Group, Aramark, Norfolk Coffee & Tea, and Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University.
