🚦 Eyes up, Redbirds! Between checking your phone and rushing to your next destination, it’s easy to get distracted. But when you’re crossing the street or behind the wheel, those distractions can have serious consequences.

October is Pedestrian Safety Month, and it's a good reminder that we all have a role to play in keeping each other safe.

If you’re walking, put your phone away, look up, use marked crosswalks and crosswalk lights, and pay attention to your surroundings. If you’re driving, slow down, stay alert, and yield to pedestrians walking in crosswalks.

Let's look out for one another and make good decisions! 🚶

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. 💜

To anyone who has experienced domestic violence or relationship abuse: we hear you, we believe you, and we stand with you. We also know that supporting survivors starts with listening, learning, and knowing where to turn for help.

Throughout the month, there are events happening across campus to raise awareness and help our community better understand how we can support those affected by abuse.

Tomorrow, Oct. 6, our own Sgt. Mike Gardner will join campus and community professionals for an open panel discussion about recognizing the signs of domestic violence and available resources.

We’ll share the panel details and a campus resource guide in the comments below.

If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please reach out for support. You don’t have to go through it alone.

We’ve recently heard from students who have been targeted by concert ticket scams through online groups and messaging platforms. 🤳

In a common version of the scam, someone offers tickets for sale, usually at a cheap price or even free. They then ask for money to “transfer” or “release” the ticket. After you pay, the ticket never shows up, and the seller may stop responding.

A few things to keep in mind:
• Are the prices too good to be true? It could be a red flag.
• Don’t trust ticket screenshots. They can be copied or altered.
• Use official or authorized ticketing platforms whenever possible.
• Watch for extra “transfer” or “processing” fees.

If something feels off, take a step back before sending money. 💵

Around Illinois State, there are people whose kindness leaves a lasting mark. Dr. Adam Peck was one of those people.

As assistant vice president for Student Affairs, Adam cared deeply about the Redbird community. Even something as simple as providing umbrellas for students caught in the rain reflected his compassion.

Though Adam tragically passed away in 2022, his kindness lives on through the people he touched.

This weekend, we ask that you honor Adam’s memory with a Peck of Kindness. Small gestures like holding a door, checking in on a friend, or leaving a kind note could make the biggest impact to someone’s day.

How will you share a Peck of Kindness? ❤️
