Last Saturday we had a group of students come out to Creekside Bike Park as part of the Little Event. There were around 30 students, joined by approximately 10 community member who came out to help rebuild the trails that day. Sections of the trail had become rutted, which caught rainwater and washed out the trails, turning them into drainage channels. In preparation for the volunteers, I ordered two dump-truck loads of ‘red select’ fill dirt delivered to the park. Students got to work clearing debris from the trails, filling wheelbarrows, and bringing the fill dirt to the parts of the trail that needed it. Once there, the dirt was raked, shaped, and tamped into place, forming durable trails.
By smoothing out these sections of trails, the volunteers saved the Parks & Rec department thousands of dollars in hiring contractors to do the work. They also made the park much more enjoyable for visiting mountain-bikers, and the rebuilt sections of trail should be good for the next couple of years. We were lucky enough to be sponsored by a couple of local business owners for this event, Scissortail Cycles brought drinks and Taco Casa brought food! We would like to thank the community for coming out and making the event at Creekside such a success!
