Let's build a more sustainable North Adams!

Last week, the North Adams City Council voted unanimously to expand our city's Tree Commission and create a new Sustainability & Tree Commission.

This was a true team effort. Thank you to my fellow Councilors, Mayor Macksey and her administration, Tree Commission Chair Stephen Betti, the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access Commission, and Green NA for your work, guidance, and support.

The new Commission will continue caring for and planting our city’s trees while taking on a broader role in environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and ecological health. Its work may include renewable energy, conservation, recycling, water management, biodiversity, and sustainable development.

Now we need to build the Commission. Assuming our three current Tree Commission members stay on, and I hope they will, we’ll need four new members, including a goal of having at least one member under the age of 25.

Interested in helping shape North Adams’ future? Apply through the City’s Boards & Commissions application and select “Tree Commission" here: https://www.northadams-ma.gov/government/boards_and_commissions/boards_and_commissions_application.php

Whether you join this Commission or find another way to get involved, I hope you will participate. North Adams needs people who care enough to roll up their sleeves and help build the future, one tree planting at a time.

Thank you!

My first trip out of the Berkshires in a very long time brought me to Provincetown for 2 nights. My goals were to visit friends, watch the sunset over the ocean, and, hopefully, come home with a few fresh ideas. I stayed with a friend who works on economic development and housing issues on the Outer Cape, and when he invited me to a Housing Visioning Forum in town hall, I jumped at the opportunity.

I wanted to hear how a community on the other side of Massachusetts is thinking about housing and I learned that while our challenges can look very different, there are some striking similarities.

On the Outer Cape, the average home price is over $1 million. Here in the Northern Berkshires, our housing market looks very different. But communities in both places are wrestling with the same fundamental challenge: how do we close the gap between the cost of creating housing and what working people in our communities can actually afford to pay?

I learned a lot. I brainstormed with some great people including a hero of mine, Alex Morse, former Mayor of Holyoke and current Town Manager of Provincetown, and I came away with ideas I’m eager to bring home.

And now I’m headed back to North Adams, just in time for tonight’s Affordable Housing Trust meeting and my shift behind the bar at Steeple City Social. Sometimes getting a fresh perspective means getting out of town for a little while. I’m looking forward to bringing some of what I learned back home.

As I dig through my backlog of hundreds of texts, emails, and social media messages, I look back fondly on Primary Day. What a wild and wonderful adventure of a day that was. Sure, we got absolutely soaked from the morning downpour, but what I will remember most is the overwhelmingly positive response and support we received at the 13 polling locations across the district.

I am deeply grateful for and proud of the friends who stood in the rain, the volunteers who picked up an extra sign and joined us, and the family members and campaign volunteers who gave up evenings, weekends, and countless hours to help us advocate for the future of our region.

I visited and held my sign out front of each of the polling locations on Primary Day, and I'm so glad I did. I loved connecting with each of the 13 municipalities in our district; Adams, Cheshire, Clarksburg, Florida, Hancock, Hinsdale, Lanesborough, New Ashford, North Adams, Peru, Savoy, Williamstown, & Windsor.

A campaign has a candidate’s name on the signs, but it takes an entire community to bring it to life. This campaign belonged to every person who believed in our message, shared our vision, and showed up when it mattered.

We may not have gotten the outcome we wanted, but I wouldn’t trade the experience and the time spent with the amazing people I met along the way for anything.

Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart, 1st Berkshire District!

We didn’t win this election. But we built a movement. Thank you for being a part of it!

The primary results are in, and while we didn’t get the outcome we were hoping for, it was CLOSE. We came within 2 percentage points of defeating a long-standing incumbent.

I’m incredibly proud of the campaign we ran. We worked our tails off, stayed positive, focused on the future, and built real momentum across the 1st Berkshire District.

And I think the message is clear: our region is ready to move forward. Ready to rebuild. Ready to come together, show up, take action, and build a bright, successful, and affordable future for all of us.

To everyone who knocked doors, held signs, made calls, donated, hosted events, encouraged me, talked to your friends and neighbors, or simply believed in this campaign: thank you. You are more than campaign supporters. You’re friends, family, and partners in progress.

Sure, I’m disappointed. Sure, I haven't gotten quite enough sleep all year. But I’m also more hopeful than ever.

I said last night, “We’ll get ’em next time.” And I meant it. I’ll be running again. And in the meantime, I’m not going anywhere.

We built something together. Let’s keep building. And let’s have a blast while we do it.

With love and gratitude,

Andrew

It's time for a switch...vote for Fitch! We are 1 day away from the Sept. 1st Primary. It's time to make a plan to vote between 7:00 AM and 8:00 PM at your municipality’s polling location. Every vote matters, and it is so important that your voice and your vision for the future of our region are counted.

The weather may be bad, but we want the outcome to be good! So grab your raincoat, bring your umbrella, and help me win this race for State Representative for the 1st Berkshire District.

Today, I’ll be knocking on doors and visiting all 13 communities in the district one last time before Election Day, ending the night with a standout in Adams.

I am incredibly grateful for every minute of volunteer time, every conversation at your doors and community events, and every vote.

Thank you for believing in this campaign. Now let’s finish strong and win this thing!
